2005 wrx... everything is pristine, 160psi across the board compression, 60k mi ect.
Here is where im tossed up.. there are some awsome deals out there right now and im about to pull the trigger, here are some final thoughts... blouch 16G-XT OR blouch 18G-XT Either with 1000cc ID injectors (its what surgeline COBB recommends either way) As far as #'s are concerned im not looking for anything in particular. I drive 20 mi per day round trip on the Hwy. Other then that it cruises around town and anything else i ask. The vehicle will never see the track or strip. Im looking to make this upgrade once.. and only once. Thats why the 18G is in the mix. If i were ok with trying a couple options... id get the 16G for sure. I was thinking if i go with the 18g id like to put a 38mm EWG on there with the 7mm hot side. I know this is super subjective, ive shearched for 4 months now.. so no "GO LOOK!!!" BUT... IS the 18G on the stock 5sp driveline asking for it? Im not an aggressive driver.. but i WILL use what I have. If i go 16G... Should i drop the EWG and save $550??? If i dropped the EWG and 18G id prob pick up a header set or at minimum a cross pipe. Incase your wondering what ill be buying with the turbo... PW IC, samco Inlet, COBB SF intake, wally 255, 1000cc ID injectors Already have 3 port, ti tek catless bell mouth and uncatted GS uppipe. Thanks for any and all helpful insight!! ![]() Yay for new turbo either way!!!!! ![]()

You don't have a WHP, car's use, or budget. And you are going to use injectors that are WAY too big for either turbo. You are pretty much getting ready to take a big bite out of a Suck Sandwich. If Surgeline is in fact your tuner:
1. Ask their recommendation and ask about the R model of those turbos. 2. Ask them to come here and explain exactly why in the hell they are recommending for you to install injectors that are FAR more expensive and FAR too big for your application. You tell them Unabomber is calling them out on the internets for this and to show their face and explain themselves.....either they are screwed up or your memory is. |

The "R" or ball bearing is nice but living a few houses down from Pius Eberle of Bell Turbo, a legend in my opinion, says the serviceability of the ball bearing is not as easy and neither is the high speed balancing. Lets just stick to the 16G-XT and the 18G-XT for the sake of the discussion
cars use.. as stated.. i drive it daily, 20 miles on the hwy with some mixed in there. it will never see the track or strip. WHP.. as stated, not a particular # in mind. really. Budget.. $4k Everyone always talks so much crap about people coming here saying i want XXX hp.. how do i get it. Im saying im not so much concerned with the numbers, but if the 18G is asking for it on a stock 5sp drivetrain. As stated before, im not an aggressive driver, but i will use what i have. Injectors... I guess ill hold on those seeing as how you, Ron, someone whos advise i dont need to take with a grain of salt, seems to think its a bad choice. I KNOW COBB suggested the 1000cc ID injectors. They said the idle of the 1000cc IDs are flawless and leaves plenty of headroom without any performance gap. I dont make injectors, thats why im here. To get opinions... I thank you for yours. Well those dudes are a bunch of knuckleheads for that advice. Recommending you spend $200 more than you need is dip**** advice. There. I said it.
Get the R. Serviceability is moot. The odds of you owning your car long enough to service your turbo is none and none. Not gettnig a turbo due to serviceability is like buying a car based on resale value....a nutty prospect. Your car though....but I gots an R and I recommend to way more than a normal turbo due to just taking the slack out of the throttle nets you 5 PSI. I recommend the 16G XTR from Blouch. It makes 18G power and requires 650 injectors. Spin it to 20-24 PSI and love life. That's my exact set-up in my 04 and I heart it. And if you look under my username, you might learn something about purchasing one. |

SO... Right now in my basket is this...
Blouch 16G-XTR DW 750 injectors tial 38mm ewg GS Up-pipe Process West IC COBB SF intake AVO inlet little stuff Do i really need to upgrade my EWG fittings!? I agree, ive never seen someone run 1000cc's with a 16 or 18G but i didnt think they would set me up poorly. The cost for the 1000ccs is $15 less then the DW 750s.. maybe that had something to do with it? I told cobb budget wasnt really an issue, and its not I got 2 hours before i make the purchase, some online sales are ending then... WHAT SORT OF DEALS YOU GOT?!?!?! WELL... I went ahead and got my order in
Blouch 16GXT AVO inlet DW 750cc Injectors GS coated up pipe 38mm Tial EWG SS oil feed line Wally 255 COBB SF intake Process west intercooler COBB post MAF hose Wastegate bracket already have: Ti_tek catless bell mouth.. Catless system through and through 3-port GS EBCS I decided on the 16G-XT for the same reason i didnt go with the 18G. I feel its just getting into the realm of worrying about the drivetrain. Look for me in proven power soon enough!!! |

I would have thought about your transmission more. Sorry I would have answered sooner but research sucks.
I shattered my 5 speed transmission at ~~220WHP, stage 2. It saw a few soft launched but nothing like a pedal dump. I wasn't launching it either when it broke just cruising and put it into second. I dont think the power difference is that big between the 16 and 18g. But transmission wise its about the shock load e.g. change in torque from either clutch or high torque. So I dont think your statement has any ground "I feel its just getting into the realm of worrying about the drivetrain. " because the longevity of your transmission has to do with shockload. Think ft-lb/s vs lb^2/s |

I think you made good choices. You already stated that extra injector headroom won't be a concern. I can't compare the 16g-XT against anything but the VF-39 but it's far more responsive than the VF. The only benefit for going with 1000's is if you decide to run e-85.
If I had to do it again, I'd probably get the XTR for the ball bearings, but when I got the XT, it was newer and the XTR wasn't on the radar here or Blouch's website. If it's in your budget, I'd get the X-pipe and P&P the exhaust manifold. You'll be able to see how restrictive the stock X-pipe is when you take it apart. You'll have most of the benefits of a header but without the worry of a eventual crack developing. 5 speeds are unpredictable. Mine worked but I swapped it for preventative purposes. Your already thinking it, so a trans upgrade should be on your to-do list. I'd research what route you want to go and get prepared. Transmission upgrades are expensive, but they are worse when you are strapped for cash and have a downed car that you need for commuting. |

Threw my cobb sf intake, post maf tube and fuel pump on. Rallysportdirect had my products to me two days after purchase. Really awesome company to deal with. The Cobb sf intake sounds amazing and feels really good on my set up. No retune for the parts I added... all is amazing.

Oh and omg... that process west intercooler is amazing. Quality is out of this world and the packaging (some don't care, I do) was flawless.

Sounds like you will be happy about your choice. The tranny issue is more about how you drive it. The previous poster that said theirs was a quick casualty, but their profile also shows it was an 02'. 300wtq is where they say the sweet spot is. If you can afford to mod, you should have a little slush fund in case the engine or transmission bites the bullet. With that turbo, you are probably right at that sweet spot maybe a little above. Don't drop the hammer at 5000rpm at every light and I'm sure you'll be fine.
