Default New York show: The flying car

Quote:
Fresh from its maiden test flight last month, the Terrafugia Transition Street-Legal Airplane is on display at the New York motor show.
The makers of the second generation Terrafugia are using the New York show to garner publicity and raise funding to put the part-car, part-plane into production. The prototype on display is one of two that have been built for test work and for preparing for tooling for the production version.
Gallery: Terrafugia Transition Street-Legal Airplane
The rear-drive two-seater is powered by a 100bhp Rotax 912S engine and weighs 650kg. It has been designed to be switched from car to plane, or vice versa, in under half an hour, with its wings extending or folding out at the touch of a button. Its makers say it folds small enough to fit in a conventional garage.
While six phases of flight testing are planned to continue development and meet aircraft safety standards, no mention is made of testing to car safety and compliance standards and no on road performance figures are available.
Although there is no firm production date at present, deposits are being taken. The final asking price is expected to be around 200,000.

Technically, it's a roadable aircraft, not really a flying car.

I am not sure why this unholy combination is being pushed by culture so much.

Things that make good aircraft make bad cars. Things that make good ground-traveling cars make poor or completely unfeasible aircraft.

Fly or drive... pick one. DO it. If you have the opportunity to rise above the terrain, why would you stay on the road for any amount of time?

If airport availability is the big issue, then focus on personal-sized VTOL airplanes or helicopters that can land and take off from a driveway, yard, or street.

Road vehicles and aircraft are two different things for substantial reasons. Combining them has substantial compromises.

Otherwise, drive a land vehicle to a point where you can use an aircraft, as we do now.

Every year or two, these flying car concepts/prototypes show up. I think it is great engineering but I just don't see these taking off (no pun intended). If it ever goes into production, these end up being toys for the filthy rich.

And, look at the huge blind spots with the wings folded up.

Does this mean that the cops are going to be issued Stinger missiles now?

This is just what we need. The same people who drive for 10 miles in the right lane with the left blinker on, talk on the phone while doing thier makeup, drink, wait until you are on them before pulling out in front, pull in the far left lane and go 5 mph below the speedlimit just to slow everyone else down, don't bother keeping tyres with tread let alone snow tires in snow heavy places while driving a light rearended small rwd truck, drive with cracked windshields, no working headlights.....

These are people who we need to give a car flys instead of only being restricted to the road.

The thing is this thing still needs a runway. Most airports, even small municipal ones have rental cars available. This works for only a very narrow slice, but it will likely sell just because of that fact.

I saw the prototype two years ago, it was a fairly different design. Great novelty for the Pop-mech crowd. File next to the turbine and nucular(sp?) cars.
