Default Formula 1 2013 - Will RBR get the four-peat?

...and is four-peat even a word? Get ready to watch the last season with the 2.4L V8s before the turbo V6s are introduced!

With fairly stable regulations in place, expect the field to tighten up and the effect of Coanda exhausts to be improved and heavily researched prior to testing. Mclaren maybe be experimenting with a slightly higher cockpit just ahead of the driver, as they tested in Monaco. Marussia should gain KERS over the winter as well. DRS will be restricted from secondary ducting effects, though teams may experiment with fluid switch-activated rear wing stalling devices. Lotus, Mercedes, and RBR were all seen trying variations on this concept in practices. Finally, changes to the tires (particularly the rear, as debuted in Brazil) will force the teams to adapt to a tire that rolls a bit more, with the intention of giving more mid-corner traction.

Grosjean NOT confirmed at Lotus. They have stated that he will be back, but nothing is signed yet and the team are reviewing his performance before signing him officially.

Don't forget about the ban of DRS during practice and more importantly, qualifying except in the race DRS zone.

i'd like mclaren to do well. idk about perez though. he seemed like a good driver, and then he signed with mclaren and his driving went downhill pretty quickly.

and i'd like merc to do well to show you guys that the car is not all that bad. and if it is, then lewis got exactly what he wanted. more money and a car that is behind that he can help bring to the front.

i bet lewis' mclaren and schumi's merc swap places on the grid next year.

no way, Teams that are clearly better than Mercedes: McLaren, RedBull, Ferrari, Lotus, Sauber

Force India, Williams and Toro Rosso are the teams that Hamilton will fight against next year

And no victory for Hamilton in 2013

Unless Merc can get a handle on their tire degradation/overheating problems, Hamilton will struggle. He'll still do better than Rosberg, but the Merc just isn't the car that Mclaren had at the end of this season. Still, how many times have we seen a car that sucks one season and is fast the next?

Another addition will be the nose "modesty panels" that will not alter the crash structure, but will hide the step that many people complained was ugly. Hopefully there's a nice aero benefit as well.

I'm still amazed at how bad Mercedes has been for the 3 consecutive years. I really thought Brawn had the secret sauce, but 2009 was just a lucky break since he was on the technical committee that wrote the 2009 regulations and knew there was a weakness in the wording of the regulations that allowed the double diffuser exploit, even though it only narrowly was declared legal midway through the season.

I heard Honda actually had three different car designs being worked on simultaneously. They threw the kitchen sink (and a ton of $$) at the problem. Throw a merc engine in the back, and suddenly you had a design that magically worked, and arguably the best engine out there at the time. I recall Renault asked twice for engine parity upgrades and Ferrari at least once to get on a level field with Merc. Sometimes ya just get lucky.

I agree, though...how the hell have Merc not been able to keep it together? I thought they stole a march on everyone with the double DRS, and their early win in China really had me thinking they might hang with the big boys.

Maybe this year?

That's not a bad bet! Only guy to finish all of the races. If their car had gotten a handle on the Coanda exhausts earlier, they might have had a real shot.

Grosjean's fast, too. He just needs to be a little less aggressive/smarter with his moves in traffic.

I think 2013 will be a driver's year as this is the least disruptive rule transitions between F1 years for a while... unless someone invents ground effect/active suspension/6-wheels/traction control/anti-lock brakes/dumbo ears/V-TEC/seamless gearshifts/hidden fuel tank/j-damper/wheel ovens/custom tire gas mixtures/exhaust-blown diffuser/f-duct/wheel shroud/flexy wing/double diffuser/double DRS/bimetallic brake duct/rubber nose/Coanda Exhaust.

Yeah if they keep improving with qualy they are a real threat. It's as if Grosjean is blind in traffic, too inconsistent as well.

Get Grosjean to finish some races and they'll be battling for 3rd (or even 2nd) in the constuctor's, especially with a zealous newbie of Perez at McLaren.

Not going to happen. Could be his last year, though.

Yeah, that car is all that bad. They seem to get 1 car into Q3 at best. Last time both made it was Korea. Neither made it in Japan. 12th is about where they've been qualifying the past handful of races on average. It's a different season and a different driver, but that car's not even thereabouts now.

Maybe I'm not thinking 4th dimensionally, but are you saying Lewis will be battling for pole in 2013?

it's the mediocre drivers, IMO. i guess we'll see.

but yes, i think HAM will be closer to the front maybe where mclaren was mid 2012. 3rd-7th ish, and PER will be 6th - 10th ish. only time will tell.

So tire destroyer Hamilton will be in a tire destroying Mercedes. Seems about right.

And it's Infiniti, the car brand, not infinity the uncountable unending, uh, stuff.

I'm calling Alonso as WDC, and a tight Constructors. Massa will win again, and Montoya will podium.

Bottas replaces Senna at Williams

In one of the least surprising moves, Williams have confirmed that Valtteri Bottas will replace Bruno Senna for the 2013 season.

The 23-year-old Bottas, who has made several Friday practice appearances for the Grove-based squad this year, will race alongside Pastor Maldonado.

"In Pastor and Valtteri we have two of the most exciting talents in motor racing and I am especially excited about what 2013 can bring for Williams," said team boss Sir Frank Williams.

"Pastor has always demonstrated remarkable pace and this year has seen him mature as a racing driver. Valtteri is quite simply one of the most talented young racing drivers I have come across and we expect great things from him in the future. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our departing driver Bruno Senna for his hard work over the past year and wish him the best of luck going forward.''

Bottas won the 2011 GP3 Championship and spent the past three seasons as Williams' test driver.

''It has always been my life-long dream to compete in the Formula One World Championship," the Finn said.

"To do so with one of the most legendary teams in the sport is incredibly special. I've really enjoyed my three years with Williams so far and feel very at home here so my goal was always to stay for 2013 and progress to a race seat. I'm looking forward to getting my Formula One career started and enjoying a lot of success with Williams.''

considering the ferrari was a much worse car than the redbull this year, ferrari should be able to win. look how close it was with a much crapperererer car.
