The more I look at the MP4-28, the more I think all the little aero tweaks have been intentionally omitted. The turning vanes under the nose, the vortex genertors over the radiator inlets, and the rear wing strakes that hang below the end plates all look either like dummies or aren't installed. It's like all the development parts from last season have been scrapped.

I looked at the coanda effect exhaust solution and it really looks like they dumbed that down for the release as well.

Looks like Ferrari has gone with a really high nose, too. Based on that head-on shot, if they raise the nose much more, the drivers won't be able to see!

The first and last pics also have the turning vanes above the radiator inlets, which none of the other pics have. Different iterations of the design? Or maybe one version is the "trimmed out" version for the low downforce tracks?

Giedo van der Garde has won the battle for the second race seat at Caterham for 2013, the team confirmed on Friday.

Following months of discussions, the Dutchman has got the nod over Heikki Kovalainen, Vitaly Petrov, Bruno Senna and Luiz Razia to become Charles Pic's team-mate this season.

Van der Garde, who was Caterham's reserve driver last year and won races for its GP2 team, already has F1 mileage under his belt after driving in several Friday practice sessions as well as at the young driver test.

The Dutchman had also been part of the Spyker team's line-up in 2007, carrying out testing duties for the squad.

Speaking about his move in to a race seat, van der Garde said: "I know I am ready to take the step up to F1 and all the work I have done throughout my career, and particularly in the last year with this team, has brought me to my ultimate goal.

"Throughout 2012 I was able to fully integrate myself into the team, both through the FP1 sessions I ran at a number of tracks that were then new to me, and as reserve driver, fully embedded with the team throughout the season.

"Now I can continue to learn at the highest level of motorsport and show that I am ready for F1. I cannot wait to start work."

Caterham's decision to sign van der Garde and Pic is a departure from its previous mantra of securing experienced talent to help it in F1, and will have been motivated in part by financial considerations.

Team principal Cyril Abiteboul said last year that he was keen to bring on younger men now - which has been proven with his choice for 2013.

"We continue to grow as a team and we are committed to giving young talent across the motorsport industry the chance to grow with us and this is Giedo's opportunity to show he deserves his place at the very highest level of global motorsport," he said.

Van der Garde's appointment, with Razia now set to take the second seat at Marussia, means that Kovalainen, Petrov and Senna all appear to be without F1 drives for 2013.

My guess is the additional ducts up high are for tracks where they may be able to exploit a rear-wing stalling device (known within Lotus as "The Device").

Although unconfirmed, Razia looks set to have the 2nd Marussia seat. That leaves just an opening at FI, which is closing quickly. And my goodness, the back of the grid is going to be a cluster this year.

Sauber Ferrari:
Nico Hulkenberg
Esteban Gutierrez (rookie)

Sahara Force India:
Paul di Resta*
???? (announcement coming after car launch)

Williams Renault:
Pastor Maldonado
Valtteri Bottas (rookie)

Scuderia Torro Rosso:
Jean-Eric Vergne (2nd season)
Daniel Ricciardo (2.5nd season)

Caterham Renault:
Charles Pic (2nd season)
Giedo van der Garde (rookie)

Marussia Virgin Racing:
Max Chilton (rookie)
Luiz Razia (tentative) (rookie)

1) I love the black band around the bottom.
2) I must have missed the switch to O.Z. wheels last year.

I almost forgot that F1 will be starting in Australia in a little over a month.

I would like to see what Mercedes car will be able to do this year under Lewis. I think he will surprise most with a win or 2 this year. That could be do to a number of reasons. But I'm interested to see what Lewis will be able to get out of the car.

Luiz Razia, a 23-year-old Brazilian, looks set to secure the Marussia race seat for 2013 recently vacated by salaried driver Timo Glock.

Brazil’s Globo said Razia, the 2012 GP2 runner-up, had secured the place “after months of negotiations”.

The official announcement will be made on February 5, during the presentation of the new car” at Jerez, said the report.
