Default Muffler shops saying "NO!"

So i have a 2005 STI that i have had its entire life. Every 2 years i have taken it to a shop where they put the stock downpipe back on so i could smog it. I never had any issue with any shop doing this. This year, every shop i went to flat out said they will not install old equipment, especially if that equipment has catalytic converters on it. Has anyone had this sort of problem lately? Did these shops all of a sudden grow a tree hugging conscience?

I know replacing a DP isn't all that hard, but i just liked the convenience of not having to crawl under my car.

Ive had shops do that to me 5 years ago just to put on my cat and a new catback. They wouldn't touch my car so I took the 30 minutes to do it on my own for free.

Man my smog is coming up in May. Don't really feel up to putting everything back to stock myself. Need to start making some calls. Good luck with your smog

I was talking to a guy at a muffler shop just about a year ago and he was telling me if they put an illegally modded car on the racks and see it they will immediately drop it and send you packing. Apparently these shops can get in quite a bit of trouble for working on cars with illegal mods on them. You'd probably almost be better off pulling in with no exhaust at all haha.

For the right price, and with enough looking, you can always find someone to do it. Or take 45 minutes to yourself, ask a Buddy, have a beer, and save some cash.

10x harder to get an illegal smog where you dont even need to show up. a lot of the shops had to get a new type of machine and I was told no way to get around it now.

gotta wait for the guys to figure out how to get around it.

New machine? I've never been put on a dyno for smog... it's a sniff test and obd reader if I recall. Keep your cats in and you won't run into this problem, not to be rude...
