Question Low Boost Oil Consumption

So just got my AP and loaded the OTS lvl1 map and took the car out for a spin. I've been thinking the car has been getting slower and slower feeling and I was right. I was only able to hit 10.9 boost and after this past oil change my car only went 2300 miles before needing 2+ qts of oil added to it.

I take it this is a sign of turbo death right? Any suggestions other then pull intake and exhaust and look at the turbo?

You think rings could cause ths issue? crap
other then not hitting target boost and the oil It runs and drives great. no start up issues, no misfire or roughness counts. I guess this weekend ill track down a leakdown tester.

it is a high possibility thats its the motor and not the turbo in this situation?

Well dis-connecting the wastegate actuator and doing a quick drive confirm that its the turbo or motor?

with the engine running...take the oil filler cap off....raw exhaust = dead motor

damn that simple huh...ok well i pulled the intake to the turbo off and didnt really feel any shaft play or anything. If the oil seals went on the tubo could that also do the low boost and oil consumption or 90% its the rings and just need to reassemble and start to find out.

Well pulled intake, no shaft plant on compressor side of the turbo. Started it up after i put it together I feel some air blowing from the oil cap at idle, if you hold your hand 8 inches away you can't really feel it anymore.

What's the next step?

Oil wise I'm useing penzoil sythetic 1030

also just took the car out for a couple hard pulls to make sure nothing would blow off and this time i went from 10.9 max to 11.2 this time. Maybe a huge boost leak? that doesnt explain the loss of oil unless the oil I'm using sux...

Ok more info:
Just disconnected the waste gate and drove the car. Hit 23bls very very quickly. ( i got off it just as fast whew ) So I'm thinking my low boost is because of the little boost control solenoid thing right?

Now I'm still concerned abou the oil consumption. Should I swap to that rotella stuff and give it a shot for another 3k?

Do you see oil smoke from the oil fill tube while the motor is running?

If your turbo seals were eating oil, you'd have signs from the exhaust.

Why are you using a 10w30 oil? This will attribute to some oil loss.

The issue here is not so much lack of boost, but oil consumption. Rule out the big before the little. Since you have an AP, do a data log and that will give a LARGE idea of what is wrong.

My guess is dead/dying motor.

Do the oil fill tube test. Then do a compression check. Both require arguably less work than pulling off the inlet like you already did. I'm going to have to agree with the rest here, probably a cracked ringland.

Well the tip of the exhaust is pretty black, and no smoke from the oil cap. What specifically should I log with the ap?

Edit: what oil do you recomend instead of the 10-30.

All exhausts will be black, no matter how well the car runs.

5w30/5w40 as stated by Subaru.

The stock logging options should be fine for the AP. But double check with the Cobb youtube video on "Logging with your AP" or something similar to that name.

OK I thought there was something specific you wanted me to log. I will get a log up on my way from class later today and am going to swing my a parts store to get a compression tested since the little nipple on mine died a few weeks ago.

(almost cost a buddy his motor too, though he had low compression then found out my gauge couldn't hold compression any more)

have not had a chance to do the compression check yet, but checked out the exhaust stream through the oil cap and had 7.5K ppm of HC coming out of it. So i think the motor is dead.

Doing to do a compression check once it cools down a bit, motor is pretty hot work on right now.

there are THOUSANDS of 'what oil' threads....

oil formulations change...therefroe what was best 10 or 5 or even 2 years ago may be **** NOW...

there are several very good WIDELY AVAILABLE oils out there...the best inexpensive option that can be had at almost any walmart in the usa is the 5w40 rotella T6...the one in the blue jug

Thanks scotty. I thought about that after I posted. I'm really not thinking about the oil, im worried about the compression check and lack of power. I'm going to have to wait to the weekend to check it cause I'm just way too busy at work right not to do it.

Do you think I could have a problem with just using **** oil thats getting burnt normally ( a friend says his suby uses oil too) and I just have a bad boost controller since I accidentally ran 23lbs for like 2 seconds when I bypassed the wastegate?

So compression check was 1,2,3 and 130lbs #4 at 135.

Still ringlands or do you think turbo or PCV system. I'm totally confused at this point.

Doesn't look like there's any bottom end damage. The turbo shows that it is capable of producing boost. What are you using for boost control? The oil consumption could be because of the PCV. FWIW, I wouldn't be messing with any 30 weight oil if you have any consumption.

if you are using ANY 5w30 or 10W30 oil....THAT is likely the issue...or part of it anyway

Ill try to step if up to 40w. Its the stock boost controller with all the vacuum lines and pill in. After I pulled the intake tube the first time I drove it for a day and had a massive oil leak from what looks like the intake tube going into the turbo. Mid way down the intake tube where the flex wrinkles are there is a lot of oil soaking and the tip where it connects to the turbo is very oil logged. I checked the PCV valve and it was clean and rattled freely (I brake cleaned it anyways just to make sure it wasn't clogged)

I am totally stumped with this car, I can't figure out whats going on with it. I was thinking my lack of boost could be from oil being sucked into the boost control valve from the intake tube maybe? At this point I'm totally lost on this thing.

EDIT: Uncle Scotty 10w30. The cap calls for 5w30, should I be using 10w40?

So I changed the oil to the correct weight and it seems to be smoking like 90% less, I have the correct compression but I still am not hitting target boost of 15.9. The AP only reads 10.1 at a good full throttle pull and the wastegate actuates to 38% max when doing it.

Can oil from the oil issue earlier in the boost control valve maybe cause this? Also I checked and the pill is in the wastegate hose and in the right place.

the turbo MAY be going bad and you got ONLY 23psi when it was unrestricted.....it may have wanted to go higher but didnt because it may be starting to go

and it is possible that one of the breather lines is kinked/clogged/disconnected and is causing this oil issue if the compression is still good

oil in the amounts and areas where you have it is almost always a broken ringland on a piston
SOMETIMES....they can be bad and cause oil issues like yours and still give good compression numbers....until they GO...a friend had this issue....'good' compression numbers....BAD oil consumption/oil in the intake system....for 1500 miles...then 70psi compression in #4 and done

id be preparing for a new shortblock/rebuild in any event

Yes I'm having a friggin fire sale around my house of all my spare parts to get ready for the big bang. I looked into the boost control valve and found oil in it and cleaned it out with break clean and dried it but still no real change in boost, went from 10.1 to 10.6 ( which is when I logged )

I hit 25 PSI and really fast got off the throttle, i didnt let it peg its self out. Should I let it peg or not a good idea?

I was thinking the turbo may be out since since all the oil in the intake system, oil consumption and low boost...

N00000000000!!!!!

id be driving it easy until you figure it out.....this may be an issue that you can live with for a bit until it lets go.....i know one guy who drove his EASY for quite a while---like almost a year....with 80psi compression in one cylinder.....and just had to add oil to it
tore it down and just hadda hone it out for the rebuild...he got real lucky

if you got good compression NOW...and baby it...it may be a LOT less of an issue later

and you may figure out that it is another issue that woulda made it blow up if you drove it hard.....so dont
