Default Need opinions on a which car to get!

A little history, I had an 03 wrx sold it to get a truck (tacoma) it was just more practical for me and my family. I bought my wife a new car but with the upcoming taxes I should be able to pay it off and have no bills.

So now I want a new "toy" and I'm not sure which platform to go with. I loved my subie, but I'm not sure I wanna fork out 15-20k for an sti. I'd rather spend less to have more money to mod my car. I want the car to autox and track. I really just want something that is a good platform and fun and relatively easy to get good power. I really don't want fwd but I can maybe deal with it for good platform. If I can spend around 5k I would be happy. I also would rather have a sedan for my daughter.

The cars I'm thinking about:
-eclipse gsx
-impreza rs like 98-01
-civic si
-integra gsr

Car I want but wouldn't have money to modify it
-sti 06-08
-evo 8 or 9

Any info would be appreciated.

why not buy an STI or Evo and leave it stock??..

If you don't need AWD get something else.

Eclipse GSX is good for mods and reliability is crap.

well how much money are you looking to spend on a car total? if you just want a fun toy to modify yourself then why not go for whichever is gonna be a cheaper route to buy the initial car?

If you want to autox, 98-01 2.5rs coupe. So nimble and great handling cars.

Want power. Go evo 8/9

Supercharged NA Miatas start at around 6K. Easy to set up for AX, and RWD. Very fun cars, but you are not going to get 300 HP out of one.

dID i MENTION THEY ARE REALLY FUN ?

Find a vtec B16/B16/ EF swapped Civic. You'll have way more fun autocrossing and mods are waaaaaaay cheaper than anything with the subaru name on it.

Get a fox body or sn95 mustang. You can set them up for anything.

Im looking for a new toy too and have around the same budget. It looks like im gonna be getting a 240sx with the sr20det or a b18c civic or maybe a gsx. I found a 00impreza rs with the sti wing and hood scoop that looks really sick

For a 5000 total investment I had an eg 92 civic si with b18c1 Usdm gsr motor. Only mods it had where cat back, cheapo intake, coilovers, del sol seats, gsr gauge cluster, slimline radiator. That car was a beast for something so simple. Very balanced for a fwd car.... Beat the hell out of it for two years then sold it for 4500 . Def miss that car

Out of the one's that you can afford, I'd get a 2.5RS, and swap in a JDM Sti motor in it. I'm not a fan of FWD or Honda's, and the DSM's are notorious for crankwalk.

Not looking for american anything sorry I shoulda said that. I don't need awd but i'd honestly rather have rwd or awd over fwd but yeah I'm thinking a good swapped civic would be fun. In all honesty I'm a natural born tinker (going to school for my electrical engineering) I just love working on cars and such so just want a good fun project.

I can't say miata because they just aren't comfortable to me.. 6'0 190 lbs,, some people bigger than me fit, but to me it's not a comfortable car.

How about this: 1998 integra type-r $8500 (that's the bottom price - i've alreaddy lowered it quite a bit). Title says 10k but it won't let me edit it. $8500 including snow wheels and tires. Just a thought.

For AutoX, FWD isn't that bad, by the way. Actually, considering the under steer of AWD many FWD cars can do better around a tight track than a Scoob.

With that said, I'd recommend a RSX-S. Can find them in the 8-9 area and is a decent platform to start on.

Also, a clean 99-01 RS costs more than a clean bugeye.

Disagree for the most part. Power+FWD sucks for AutoX. It's impossible to put it down exiting corners when you need it most. Go RWD.
