A lightweight FWD car will outperform a WRX/RS anyday with a competent driver around a tight autocross track. The under steer issue in the Scoobs is a pretty severe time breaker around a tight track. On a normal circuit it's fine.

What I'm getting at is not that I hate Subarus, because I love them and love to drive mine. But for his price range of not wanting to spend more than 5k, he's much better off looking for an EP3 or a Miata, maybe a 240sx. Those are all cars you can beat the **** out of and still have fun modding. Then again, I'm not sure he realizes all the handling benefits of the STi that make it worth hopping into if he actually plans to track the car.

These. Figure out which direction you want to go, and go for one of these. The Miata accelerates more slowly, but has great handling and will help you learn how to fully use a RWD car. If you just want more power than a Miata has, and you're willing to skip RWD for it, the Civics are good, and are silly-fun autocrossing. They're also fun to take to track days and pass the people who think their Corvette will automatically make them fast.

If you do choose the Miata, you can add power to it later. This can come either in the form of a turbo or supercharger (generally $2,000 to $8,000, depending on how much power and who does the work) or a V8 swap (they take Corvette engines very well, and will have a lot of power that way, but parts cost alone is more than most turbocharger setups cost).

For autox, the only thing on that list that's competitive with minimum cash outlay is the Civic.

You can find good Subie's in need of work within that price range. I have a customer selling a 2006 Legacy GT for $5000 however it has high mileage and a blown turbo. Great for a project but it will require a good bit of money to get it going. Older Impreza's are very versatile, you can do a lot with them for a reasonable budget and many parts are interchangeable.
