I mean I know it's an antenna of some sort, but what exactly is this monstrosity used for on a mobile platform?

I figure it's some HAM/CB antenna, but what's the point of having one in a car in 2013 for one, and two, what kind of range do you need to have for said radio that you would forsake anything with a height restriction for it?

Could be for stealing/hacking wifi. But most people that would do that would rather be low-key and not so obvious. I'd go with CB then.

Remote frequency/code pickup. When you go to unlock your car with a remote, that'll pick up both the frequency and code. Enter the car type and plate number for future use. Once you get enough of these code, come into the parking lot with 20 of your closest friends. Unlock all the cars. Steal contents or the cars themselves.

Happened in a big parking lot of a place where I worked. The technology is hella old. Rich from Rich's Car Tunes in Mass showed me his device to do this in 1989.

Its is a large cloverleaf style omnidirectional antenna. Could be used for the above^^ but seems like a big advertisement of questionable activity, also could be used as the base station receiver antenna on a first person video/remote control unit, or be being used to troll for various wireless video feeds of similar design.

That's all I got.
