Subaru Stars Phase 1 Phase 2 Questions

I am totally lost as I have done much searching but am now confused. I have a 98 OBS with 235,000. My questions are as follows:

1. Is this engine Phase 1 or Phase 2?
2. Is this engine OBDII?
3. I have chance to get a 2.2 from the junkyard thats been tested as good. They cannot tell me (or wont) what year this engine is. What 2.2's will "Drop-In" to the 98 OBS?

Thank-you in advance.

Phase I EJ22 interference engine, yes OBD-II. Pretty much any EJ22 between 1990-1998 will drop in, all you have to do is swap your intake manifold onto the "new" engine and call it a day. You might have to mess around with the EGR sys. if your new engine's heads don't have a bung for the EGR pipe. But you might be able to drill and tap that.

I thought his would be a phase II. Also not all Phase I EJ22's came with dual port headers and some are OBDI while others are OBDII. There is also the issue of EGR on some model years but not on others.

OP you can look at the vavle covers and see if they are flat and have the sparkplug entering through the valve cover. If so, it is Phase II. Same can be done to determine compatibility with the junkyard motor.

1998 should be OBDII regardless, unless someone previously swapped in an OBDI motor.

Unless the 2.2 came out of an early OBD1 Legacy, all other 2.2s have single port headers.

That being said, any 2.2 will bolt in with minimal fuss.
