Subaru Stars Which 2.2 is this

Can anyone identify this 2.2 as far as year (maybe theres something that will stand out that differentiates the year? The junkyard wont tell me what car it is from or even read any numbers off of the engine, however its a very good price if I can find out what year it is. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It is an EJ22E SOHC. From what year, the world may never know. IIRC this motor did not change much over the years. What are you looking to put it into?

If it is an EJ22E from 90-94, there won't be any EGR valve on the driver's side rear of the intake manifold.

EGR was introduced on the EJ22Es with the second gen Legacy from 95+.

Are the valve covers flat with the spark plugs going through them (Phase II) or are the spark plugs entering the head at an angle and outside the valve cover (Phase I)? What car are you trying to match it up with?

Thank-you for the responses. It would be potentially going into a 98 OBS. From what I understand, I need a 98 2.2. I was told the one with the exposed head studs? I wanna make the install easy as possible.

If the junkyard 2.2 doesn't have an egr you will have a cel that you can't get rid of.

It's a phase 2 engine. You can tell by the valve covers and the intake manifold. It uses the same valve cover/intake mani gaskets as the SOHC 2.5, has single port heads, and adjustable valve lash.

If you look on the bellhousing of the block, you should see a vin stamped into it, form that vin number you can figure out what engine it is.
