Default Is There A New El Camino Coming Soon?

Is There A New El Camino Coming Soon?

Is Chevrolet Bringing Back the El Camino and Nomad?

When you consider that trucks are still selling well, but these green times combined with the economy lead to the perception of a gas guzzler by some, and then you factor in that many SUV’s are going to passenger car platforms for better weight and handling, and more economy to boot, it makes a new El Camino look like the right combination for the times. Maybe Chevy thinks so too. According to GM Authority, the General has re-upped for its “El Camino” name, having renewed back in August. And if that tickles your fancy, they have also filed for the “Nomad” name. So what’s the connection? Well here in HOT ROD’s home of El Segundo, the Police cruise in Australian Holden Commodore-based sedans with the Chevy bow tie screwed onto their grilles. These were the former Pontiac G-8 sedans, the cool looking V8-powered 4-doors too good to kill, which GM killed anyway. The ute version of the Commodore as well as a nice looking wagon are both part of the Holden catalog in Australia, so if Chevy already imports the sedan, and the wagon and ute share so much with the sedan, how difficult could it be to shove a few of them onto the boat?
El Caminos and Nomads have been at the top of hot rodders want lists forever—maybe everything old is new again. So do you think that a new El Camino and/or Nomad would sell? Would you buy one? Let us know!

Wasnt this the same rumor when the G8 was coming out? Seems like the subject rears its ugly head every year or so.

Besides, a ute-based el cam wouldnt sell here, too practical, we'd want to retro it or make it less practical before we'd want it.

One of many: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...ight=el+camino

Ute (El-Camino), Wagon (Nomad)... Both available from Holden and was the rumor from '07/'08 when the G8 1st appeared. But because of the current climate with Pontiac on the chopping block/restructure, thought of additional models was deep-sixed.

The question/issue back then was the Holdens were being badged as Pontiacs. Pontiac never had an El-Camino type vehicle. How would they bring it over as a Chevy when Pontiac had 'dibs'?

Easy. Kill Pontiac.

Now, Chevy is has full unfettered access to and bringing over the Holdens under Bow-Tie.

Problem solved.

BRING THE F-ING CARS OVER DAMMIT.

I would rock a Nomad before the El Camino, but if only the Ute were available, I'd have one.

The Subaru Baja still sells at a premium for some strange reason, so that may be worth noting. Still, I see them selling just about none of either of these, nobody likes wagons anymore and people would likely rather have an actual truck than an El Camino.

Would be cool though.

I was always a much bigger fan of the Ranchero.

I'd like to see Ford make an AWD version of it out of the Taurus.

And in my world, it's starting to become clear that the Nomad just may make it over.

Other than the Caddy CTS, CTS \V, what other vehicle under GM is a "wagon"?

CTS \V - no more wagon and I think the CTS Wagon is on the chopping block too. ATS, no plans.

It would be a great move on GMs part to utilize existing vehicles to retain a wagon in their lineup, and being a Chevy, it'll lower the cost of entry for one, and may sell more than the CTS versions, since the demand for upscale wagon wasn't there. Bring them downscale.

Isn't the CTS wagon on the chopping block for next year?

I said that.

Being that the CTS wagon started at $40k... I see the Nomad as being available in the mid $20s with the 6cyl. That removes many barriers to entry for a lot of people.

Don't pretend the old El Camino wasn't ungainly.. it was just slightly less ungainly than the Ranchero.

I had a buddy in college who had spent a year restoring a Ranchero. It was a sweet car to ride around in.

Why is this not here? Would it cannibalize Equinox sales?

Also, this:

Though on second thought maybe not since the GS sedan is already too close to $40K for my liking.

DI V6 for enough power to tow and enough fuel economy to drive on a daily basis I would but one to supplement my G8.

Meh. GM reupping the trademarks on those names means absolutely nothing. It's a trivial amount of money to keep it in their possession - it doesn't mean they have any short range plans for those nameplates.

There were all sorts of rumors of this happening a few years ago when the G8 was still being produced and it didn't happen then either. Believe it when I see it.

The SSR wasn't a ute. It was a pice of garbage.

I wouldn't take a dump in that car.
