I got mine at the local hardware store, I think the clerk said it was the same style as some Toyota's. Just told him no chip, just a metal door key, and he knew exactly what I meant (it happens to be an ilco P1114 B110). 5 min. and a few bucks later and I was on my way. The grip of the key is fairly large, but it fits my wallet fine. One could always cut it down if they felt it was too big.

Like I've said before I'm sure this is overkill, and I hope I never have to use it, but for a few bucks it's cheap insurance.

So..... Because the cold weather and my cheapness, I wanted to start the car with the vallet key and then lock the doors with the "real" key/fob to heat up the car while I ran back into the house to keep warm. BUT!!! After I started the car I could bout lock the doors with my key fob.

I have the same metal key - it's a GM blank that was cut at a local locksmith's shop since none of the hardware store clerks had a clue - "if there is no blank for a 2012-2013 Subaru Impreza, it must not exist. Go to the dealer."

Confirmed it by testing the factory key and the copy at a Home Despot's key cutting station. Wanting to do a flip key mod so I can store the remote/key in a key safe when I go surfing - the friggin' factory one will not fit. My cousin's Kia Rio came with factory flip keys fer cryin' out loud.

so i have tested this out a bit. there are only two ways to lock the doors and have the car running. 1. obviously, sitting in your car with the car started; then, shut all the doors; finally, hit the lock button on the door. 2. is to hit the lock button on the key fob with the driver side door opened, start the car with the door opened and then shut the door.

i dont know where you guys got your extra key made but i have gone to several places and they dont carry the key and i told the people that it could be a toyota key as well but they were lost.

If you want a simple key just to open the door (no chip or remote), look for ILCO P1114 B110 mentioned by JohnNevets in a earlier post. I have the same one. It is a GM blank.

@ans2k, I'm sorry to mislead you with the Toyota comment. I think I may have misunderstood what the clerk was trying to say. hi5.o seems to know his stuff, I'm sure he is correct that it is the same as some GM cars. The important part is the ILCO P1114 B110. Also, my best bet when trying to find stuff like this is the local hardware store, not the big box stores. Also, you might want to look up locksmiths specifically in the phone book and call about the blank, if they don't have one I bet they will know who will.

On a side note, Good Local Hardware Stores ROCK, please help keep them in buisness. This one is the one that even though they didn't have a blank for my '76 Honda 550CB, was able to cut it just find when I got the blank from the Honda dealership, that couldn't cut it. They also had the correct electric motor for my ancient Craftsman/Delta wood Lathe. They also have odd ball plumbing parts that fit my 1930's era fixtures. Yes, if you are buying simple things it may be cheaper at the Home Depot, but for oddities, the hardware store is the place to go.

And yes, JohnNevets, nothing like a good old fashioned hardware store. Some have stuff that has sat there since the horse-and-buggy days, waiting for someone to come along looking for that right doohickey. Lost quite a few of them locally over the years, unfortunately.

Yep, it's been more than 20 years since I locked myself out of a car or more accurately it was until this morning.

What I've learned is when the car needs scraping or snow brushed off ALWAYS close the door before starting the car. This thread totally jinxed me into accidentally hitting the lock button while starting the car with the door open then getting back out to clean the snow off my car.

I'm pretty sure Canada would be on my side here.

I'll just remember to close my door whenever I start my car from now on, so that even if I hit the button a least the drivers door will unlock when I open it to get out again.
