I had an interesting experience with the VDC this morning driving in the snow. I had some understeer entering a corner, I pulled the e-brake and counter steered the car as I normally would. The VDC didn't seem to kick in until I had already started to get it straightened out. Normally the VDC kicks in pretty quickly.

Also for anyone else, would snow that has gotten packed in around the front suspension and who knows where else make the engine sound louder when placed into reverse? I noticed this when I went to move the car when clearing my driveway after having driven the car to work and back.

Either way I have been impressed with the Impreza in the snow.

I have done neither of those with my subaru. I guess I'm not childish like you.

Do you understand what traction control does??? And the difference between that and VDC??

+1, the Altimax Arctics are a great snow tire for the money. And even though they're studdable, don't get them studded.

I think that would be a reasonable estimate, but it's just a guess. I had them on my TDI, and loved them. I sold the TDI and the snow tires before I came close to wearing the tires out.

what size are you getting? I never get the tire warranty but thats me, also based on the time of year there are certain mail in rebates. september or october is when tirerack will issue the rebates which basically translate to free shipping. I paid 98 plus the rebate so 94 ain't half bad.

they are 82 at tirerack + 82.00 in shipping ended up being like 40-50 cheaper from discount tire. not sure if i will order them now, or wait until fall.

205/60-16. just a little bigger than stock for a little extra ground clearance in the winter.

Going to order my snow tires soon as prices seem good now, and stock too..

Can't decide
Altimax arctics, Q rated
Or
Firestone winterforce, S rated

Prices are about equal, also can't decide on road hazard (probably not though)

I was all set for the generals, but the firestones look great too

I'm probably going to go with Continental ExtremeWinterContact.

They seem decent price, and also got great reviews for road noise, something I don't like about a lot of winter tires. They have slightly lower reviews on several other categories, but were significantly higher rating on the noise.

I can only comment on the Generals, as I've owned that tire but not the Firestone. The Generals are GREAT. Don't bother getting them studded.

Ah, sorry, no, they don't come in 205/55/16. They do come in 205/50/17 and 195/65/15.

Generally in winter, from all I've read, a narrower tire is actually better. This is discounting any sort of looks however, if that's important.
