Default Oil viscosity - owner's manual contradicts service manual

The Owner's Manual that came with my 1997 L (2.2 liter) says that 5W-30 is the preferred viscosity. The Owner's manual also says that 10W-30 and 10W-40 are permitted, so long as the temperature is above -5 degrees F. The factory Service Manual says that 5W-30 should not be used above 30F and says in bold letters that 5W-30 should not be used for sustained high-speed driving. What gives? I drove around all summer using 5W-30, so this issue is really getting under my skin.

I'd use the heavier weight...
This is funny to me, because there was a thread about oil weight going on a few days ago and some folks suggested using heavier weight oil and a couple dudes chime in with: "OOH, you people think you're smarter than the engineers who wrote the owners manual!"
The reason newer cars recommend 5-30 is because it is thinner and has less resistance. This yields slightly better fuel economy but does does not provide more protection for your engine.
