These are the first undisguised spy pics of the all-new Porsche 911 GT3 testing on public roads in Germany.

The track-focused road car sports a new front bumper design, which houses large intake grilles and a purposeful front splitter. The car’s front also features a new air intake, not used on the previous-generation 911 GT3.
The power output is rumoured to be in the region of 450bhp, but a question mark remains over whether the engine's drive will be transferred through the rear wheels via a seven-speed manual gearbox – the previous car was available with a six-speed manual 'box only – or PDK transmission.
At the car’s rear, the GT3’s fixed rear wing is notably smaller than before, but the model’s central double exhausts remain.

Compared with the 194mph 997 GT3, the new 991 model features beefier front and rear brakes and a smoothed rear bumper design.

Sales of the new Porsche 911 GT3 are slated to commence at the end of 2013. The car is expected to be unveiled at the Paris motor show in September.

Specs and driving impressions will tell. The 991 C2S impressions I've read and heard say more capable but less fun. Probably better to try to see the car in a vaccuum rather than just comparing to the 997.

I heard the 7MT is not quite as nice as the 6MT in shift quality. Given the purpose of this car, I see little reason to pursue a long overdrive for highway MPG, which is of course the point of the 7MT.

I'd say stick to the simple formula of offering a street legal race engine with a good ol' 6MT. It would be even better if they can stick it with an old fashioned hydraulic steering rack. In this day and age, we REALLY need a car like that.

Well your opinion is not gonna change anyway. It's said and done, the new 991 will utilize a 7 speed manual.

I have confidence that Porsche will do it right. The new technology has not been mastered, give it sometime. It's all in the engineering.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I was under the impression part of the reason for that is to help boost fleetwide MPG in order to comply with CAFE (and other worldwide) fuel economy standards. Without tricks like that, I imagine it would be hard to try and comply with a range of nothing but high-end sports cars, a 4000lb super sport sedan, and heavy sport-minded SUVs. Especially now that the 914-successor is canned.

I'm sure it's due to the fuel economy standard. Let me clarify what I meant. I am not against using the 7MT or whatever else that works well enough that also increases fuel efficiency. On most 911 models. But the GT3 has always been something of a purist car, and also it is a relatively low volume model. My comment was simply that being low tech and simple to an extent actually makes more sense for this particular model.

Faster and less fun, but will it be faster than a GT-R around the 'ring yet? Porsche engineer's ears must burn every time someone says that. They'll have had 5 years to catch up by the time the GT2 version of the 991 goes on sale.

Revolutionary. You would almost think that we have not been looking at the same basic body style for decades.

GT3 is about homologation for actual racing. PDK is faster. computer-controlled automated gearboxes came from racing like F1.

The GT3 and GT2 are migrating to the M97 derived engines, rather than Metzger blocks, to fit the PDK gearbox.

And even if they do have manual gearboxes as an option, an ultra over-drive is rather pointless on a race car homologation... a 6MT would probably be fine.

991 is out... I want to see the 981 Cayman next... but that is rumored to be held back until November, but I have no idea why... 981 Boxster is already out.

2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Spy Video





Development of the ‘991’ generation Porsche 911 GT3 is well underway, with prototypes of the car spotted on numerous occasions across Europe. Interestingly, the prototypes have been testing with barely any camouflage material so we already have a very good idea as to what the new car will look like.

This latest spy video shows a prototype running some quick laps at the Nürburgring, as well as driving on some of the race track’s surrounding roads. At one point a white Nissan GT-R can be seen in the clip, though it’s unclear if this was being used as a benchmark by Porsche engineers.

Set for a reveal early next year, the new 911 GT3 is expected to follow a familiar formula to the current model, though the specifics remain unclear.

We expect the car to miss out on the 4.0-liter straight-six engine found in the 997-based GT3 RS 4.0, with it instead relying on the 3.8-liter six found in the latest 911 Carrera S, though with output raised to around 450 horsepower. This may be well short of the 500 horsepower found in the GT3 RS 4.0, but it’s roughly the same output as the outgoing GT3 RS so the car should still be a stunning performer.

Initial estimates for the performance stats are a 0-60 mph time of less than 4.0 seconds and a top speed close to 200 mph.

Overall weight is said to be down on its predecessor as well, with the final figure expected to come in somewhere around 3,075 pounds thanks to lightweight materials, option deletes, and less equipment overall.

One major departure for the new 911 GT3 is expected to be the addition of the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission as the only option. Purists may hate the idea but apparently this is the desire of most racing teams that use the 911 GT3. Furthermore, sales of Porsche 911s fitted with a manual, even in hardcore GT3 trim, are dwindling. The new 911's electronic power steering system is also expected to feature on the 911 GT3.

Look out for a world debut of the new Porsche 911 GT3 at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next march, with sales to start shortly after. Before the arrival of the new 911 GT3, however, Porsche will launch the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 and Carrera 4S models, most likely at the 2012 Paris Auto Show this September.
