Default Gimmick Motorsports Titanium Heat Wrap and Turbo Blanket (vs. DEI and PTP )

I have the DEI Titanium wrap on my headers, and the PTP Lava turbo blanket on my turbo. I like them a lot. Both products are based on "lava" and have a much different feel than traditional heat wrap. They are much smoother/softer and do not leave fiberglass fibers all over the place.

Last night I got to work with the Gimmick Motorsports Titanium versions of these two items. Basically, these are just knock off's. In the photos they look very similar, but in person they are very different. The stuff from Gimmick is basically just like regular wrap, IMO. It's very rough and itchy. It leave fibers everywhere. It's not fun to work with.

It looks nice and shiny on the roll, but it's not the same as the real stuff. Some retailers will sell you the Gimmick stuff at around half the price of the DEI/PTP, but I don't think it's worth it. Either just get the really cheap stuff and live with the inconvenience, or spend the extra for the real Titanium/Lava stuff.

As you can see in the photos above, the Gimmick stuff is not the same as the DEI or PTP. The headers are wrapped differently (individual runners vs. dual), but that doesn't change how the wrap feels. The turbo blanket actually looks a lot like the real one, but it's still itchy/flaky. Not as bad as the Gimmick wrap, but not as good as the real PTP or DEI.

In the end, I think the Gimmick stuff should work at least as well as traditional wrap, so it's note like it's a total loss. It's not necessarily junk, but it's just doesn't live up to the "Titanium" name (other than how it looks on the roll). If you get a good deal on it, and you like how it looks, then go for it. But don't expect a nice, pleasant wrapping experience like you would get with DEI titanium.

My DEI titanium T3 blanket got brittle on the inside surface and cracked open first time I removed it. Perhaps this was because I had it under the stock heat shield? I don't know. But it put "itch needles' everywhere just like fiberglass. Not something I felt like dealing with every time I needed to swap DPs for SMOG.

I didn't realize the turbo blankets had any susceptibility to become brittle after some use. The material is quite soft as shipped, but I guess the temps make the fibers brittle. Just sharing some experience that others might not know. I feel like other brands probably do this too, but I only had experience with the DEI titanium T3 blanket. If this is a typical scenario, then the pricing of the GMS makes getting a new one every couple years a little easier to swallow, as the DEI titanium ones are about double the price.

Odd. Unfortunately I haven't tried that one to compare. I had the original (non-Lava/Titanium) turbo blanket from PTP. It was on my car for several months and then I swapped the titanium one on. The standard one still looked like new when I took it off. I believe all of the blankets have a fiberglass type packing inside, so it makes sense that yours was itchy if it broke open. The real difference that matters to me is that the Gimmick is very itchy on the outside. Not a big deal for a turbo blanket, but very annoying when working with wrap.
