Important update!

I don't know what I should do. I took apart my center shifter console to replace my shifter to a shorter one. It turns out that the dealer put a huge padding in and around the shifter to suppress the whine noise! When I picked up the car, they told me that they replaced the gears and the sound was gone. So I decided to take off the padding and that whine noise is there again. What should I do? They basically just covered it up and lied to me! Thanks for all of your help

Pics? Go drive another WRX. If you experience the same whine, then it's normal. My car whines like a rally car in second and third gears.

Is it yellow foam with a black rubber top stapled together? Mine has it too, as did the 4+ 08+ WRX's that I've installed STS's for.

It has that yellow with black foam but on top of that is a black mattress looking type of foam that is poorly cut. I'll post a pic tonight.

As a former Subaru tech, I've driven countless M/T Subarus from STIs to 1990 Legacies with 300k on them. Guess what? They all whine!

Factor in that the transmission is A) right next to you legs B) Uses less helical cut gears for added strength and C) is surrounded by paper thin sheetmetal, then it's pretty obvious that you'll have noise. Factor in things like stiffer shifter bushings, group N trans mount, and trans crossmember bushings (my car has all three), and the noise only multiplies.

I'm that the OP actually had the dealer bust open the trans for something that is 100% normal.

FYI the dealer said it wasn't normal. Then my guess is when the replaced the gears it made the same noise, so they covered it up with that padding. They then lied to me and told me that replacing the gears fixed the noise. They lied plain and simple!

Who did you speak to at the dealer? A salesman?

Gear whine in these cars is normal. I've had whine since day one and even a funky deceleration grind in second gear at ~2k rpms.

These aren't super expensive cars, the gearboxes are going to make some noise. I think you are making a much bigger deal out of this than it really is. The dealership probably knew that gear whine is normal and that you wouldn't stop complaining about it until they replaced two transmissions and they all had whine, so they put some foam on it to ease your nerves after telling you they fixed it.

I spoke to the service manager and the tech. If they had just told me the truth and said it was normal, I would've accepted it. But the tech specifically said it was not normal. Makes me wonder if they lie to other people for other things.

Alright, man. Trade in your car and get standard Impreza with an auto.

You never had a problem to begin with. They opened your trans to shut you up and give you piece of mind.

I just simply asked them to check it out! I then received a call 2 hours later stating that the tech wanted to open the up the trams and that if it was due to abuse, I would have to pay $750 to open up the trans. All they had to say was. It's normal whine and I would of said okay, thanks. That's it.

I'd just unsubscribe from this thread and let it die OC, you'll probably have a more pleasant rest of the week this way.

This

After installing the group-n trans mount, TiC crossmember bushings, shifter bushings, Perrin shifter adapter, and removing the foam insullation over the shifter (had to in order for the adapter to fit) I can hear the trans whine like a crazed mental patient. I've never given it much thought as that is what transmissions do, they whine. My FWD Redline did something similar when I swaped out mounts but not nearly as loud but, then again, this transmission is twice as big and is connected to both the front and rear wheels.
When you're slipping gears or can't get it in or out of gear to begin with then begin to worry but don't worry over a little whinning. What are you going to do when you have kids?
Drive and become one with the whine.

Now that I know that's it's normal, I don't give it much thought. Just the fact that the dealer did that, kinda upsets me a bit.

The whine is fromthe stiffer shifter bushings. Creating more vibration making more cabin noise.
I cant believe dealer did all that for you when you made the car whine with stiffer aftermarket bushibgs

Bad dealer is bad, possibly the "tech" was more experienced with other makes of cars and never really experienced a WRX/STI and all of the noises they generate. It happens, after most of the replies to this thread stated that it was normal, you could've been more assertive and pushed back at the dealer, stating that you overreacted a bit and it's your first wrx. But we all make mistakes.

I worked for a dealer before, many of those "factory trained" techs you hear about never went to Subaru-specific training, many dealers won't pay to send them.

LOL at that foam.

Did you really pay for them to disassemble your tranny, put it back together with the same parts, then put that bumpy foam in?

No, it was all covered under warranty. They said that if it was abuse, then I would have to pay.

I have a 2013 STI Sedan... after reading all this I'm glad my tranny doesn't "whine". I'm sure it does, just not loudly enough for me to notice, not even once.

Sounds normal on the WRX's from everyone's feedback. Sleezy dealer though. At least you didn't pay a penny!

Sleazy is right! They could've just told me it was normal and not covered it up with that foam. I'm starting to think that the dealership just wanted to pay the mechanic warranty work.
