Default questions regarding importing a foreign vehicle (not US vehicle)

has anyone heard of anyone that has done this in the past? as a returning resident to Canada, I would be able to bring my STi back from ASIA duty-free.

I searched on RIV but it seems like it's only applicable for US vehicles??'
Would really appreciate it if anyone can give me some insights in terms of canadian safety standards such as DRL, orange reflector and such

thanks! and happy new year VIC!

Don't quote me on this but I'm 99% sure you can't import a non-US vehicle into Canada unless it's 15 years or older

Depends if it's RHD or LHD....you can buy a brand new car at the factory in Germany and ship it here...Euro delivery.

I heard this is the case as well.
If you're from Hong Kong or Japan, then you'll have to wait a lifetime until your STI gets collector status

If you're from anywhere else. I think you should be fine.
Granted it will still go through the same inspection process.

Also, if your STI was modified outside of Canada may throw a monkey wrench in the process

From the site

Quote:
Vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Canada and the United States do not comply with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act, CANNOT be altered to comply and CANNOT be imported into Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are vehicles fifteen (15) years old or older as determined by the month and year in which the vehicle was manufactured and buses manufactured before January 1, 1971.
I wonder how they check to see if the vehicle is compliant with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act?

They aren't compliant. Re-read the page. Any vehicle produced for sale outside Canada or the US is non complaint unless they are more than 15 years old.

^
Vehicles manufactured outside of Canada & US do not match the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Thus:
You cannot import any vehicle manufactured outside of North America.
You cannot modify said vehicle to match Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Do not pass go.
Do not get $200.

Hang on, I swear there's a provision for bringing your vehicle from your country, provided you've lived there a specified amount of time, to Canada. The thing is they can't sell it to someone else unless they export it to another country that will accept it or you have to wait until it's 15 years old to sell it to someone here.

Why not resell it in HK and buy one here?

Isn't it like 3x cheaper here than in HK?

I think you will be out of luck with shipping costs and the turnaround for docs and fees, it will be an economical idea just to sell it.

that is what i read on the government's website as well (returning residents who have lived abroad for a certain period of time could bring it back free of duty), but under the circumstances of matching the requirements of the canada motor vehicle safety act
