Default broken 08 wrx AC compressor clutch

the other day my ac wasn't blowing cold air. thinking it was a freon issue, i thought nothing of it. i dont usually use the ac anyway. the next day, i started the car, turned the ac knob to auto, and proceeded to shut the car off after i heard a terrible metal on metal grinding sound. after popping the hood, this is what i find

the car still under the 3 year/36K mile warranty, so i assume this is covered. has anybody else had this problem? is it absolutely necessary to have this taken care of or could i just remove the outer clutch plate that broke free? keep in mind i dont care for ac all that much, but id still like to keep the compressor. i just wouldn't get it fixed for a few days.

on both my 09 2.5i and my new 2011 wrx the a/c clutches screech on hot days when i first turn it on. it seems like a common problem on the 08+.

Just got mine replaced today on my 2009 WRX with 58,000mi. Compressor was junk. It was covered under warranty, but the belt isn't. The A/C belts are around $100 for these. I guess these compressors on the 08+ cars fail all the time.

Mine just broke as well. Just as pictured. 09 Impreza Outback Sport. 76K of hi-way miles. My dealer says way out of the 3yr/36K warranty period. Any idea how I could get this covered? Will be expensive even to do it myself.

This is a common problem. Somebody came up with a solution for that:

That is great! Thank you! Now I wish I hadn't cut the belt. I think that is a $100 part. I'll give this a try.

Actually, I checked and can get a belt from Gates (GAT K040317SF) for $22 and the installation tool for $25. Not bad.

I'm not sure if Tom's spring will fit on a outback. Does the compressor look like the picture? Is the spring broken?

I have an 09 Impreza which Tom's site says will fix. Tom's picture and the picture at the top of this thread describe my problem. The spring is broken and (I hope) nothing else.
