Default 2012 Impreza Removing the Grill

Hi so I finally got my 2012 Sport limited yesterday and im loving it so much! i want to plastidip the chrome wings on the grill black, like i've seen you guys doing. i know i could mask it ON THE CAR like some but there's no way to cover the radiator with cardboard so id rather remove it. how do you do this?? there are little black-capped things on the lip right under the hood (are they screws). directions would be much appreciated. photos not necessary but would be amazing.

Thanks!

I want to swap out my grill so I'd appreciate a how to. I expect those plastic things are push in rivets but I don't know the best way to pry them out. I'm just gonna get the sport grill cause even if you paint the original grill it's still gonna look boring.

They are simple little push pins I used a small (tiny) Flat head screwdriver to pry mine out while doing a horn upgrade. They removed very easily and went back just as quick and easy.

I see some people are trying to sell their original grills on eBay but no takers.

It is possible to remove the grille without having to remove the front fascia. Have not done it yet myself, but a few here have.

U don't have to remove the whole front bumper. I have removed the grille without removing the bumper. But you need small hands really. So there are the black pus pins on top. Remove all of them. You need to black plastic behind the grille first. That is a separate piece. Removing it will allow access to the four screws on the left and right side of the grille. Then, there are four sets of two clips. They need to be pushed together to remove the grille. Also there are clips on the sides. But I just gave it a gentle/forceful yank. But the bottom clips will break if you are not rushing. Ask me how I know. when you do push the clips at the bottom together, do not push them together at the top. Try to push them together where they meet the back of the bumper. Also start from one side. And then pull it out from one side as you push the clips together.

More boring than a sheet of chicken wire with a Subaru logo in the middle of it?

Yup you got the right stuff, did you wait for at least 2 hours in between coats for it to dry before applying the next coat?

Wow! Thanks so much for the video. Glad I got the right stuff. In the video, he said he only waited 15 minutes between each coat and 30 for the last. What should I do? Wait 2 hours or 15 minutes? the back of the bottle says 30 minutes haha.

One more bit of advice please: I'm going to black out the entire thing except the emblem. Should I bother to mask the emblem and the stuff that's black (not chrome) that I don't want to be black or can I just peel off the dip on the emblem ex post facto?

Thanks guys

I, who is used to regular old spraypaint, carelessly took off the masking tape. that's the only issue.

I'd say spray the whole thing and then use a razor to cut out the emblem.
Seems easier. The guy in the video sprays entire cars without taping over the windows. He said it's just easier, faster, and better spray coverage to just paint the windows then peel it off later.

Got my new sport grill and was able to remove the OEM grill with minimal problems. You do have to remove that back shelf and then with a bit of twisting you can get at the 4 screws on the sides. I used a stubby phillips sucessfully on the lower two. with those out you can twist it forward enough to get a hand in and push the bottom clips free. No need to remove the front fascia at all as there is enough flex to work with.
Now I'm lovin my new distinctive grill look. The mesh should do a better job of stopping rocks or big bugs from hitting the radiator and the color matched edges give it a much more subtle and
stylish look. I like how the Subie stars emblem just seems to float there.

Wow, I never checked back on this thread until today. I didn't bother with any masking, I just sprayed the whole grille and peeled off the paint on the emblem. If you're paranoid in tearing off more than what you want, you can always lightly run a sharp cutter along the crevice and peel it off.

I doubt anyone will make you a video, but this SHOULD be pretty straight forward:

No need to go under. Just use a stubby screw driver and come in from the top. Gotta really get your hand in there.
Or try to find a small ratcheting bit driver.
