My friend, a professional race driver (Le Mans, Daytona Protype, etc.) has a WRX/STI. He was the one that turned me on to them a long time ago. He said for the MONEY you can't beat it as a track car. He said all you need to take it on a race course is the following:

ECU flash
Sway bar (to stiffen roll)
Brake pads
and Race Rubber

If you want to track the car (not drag race) - it will be hard to beat vs. any other stock vehicle in that price range.

I figure a winning race driver giving me that advice, who has driven pretty much everything, must know what he is talking about.

Of course he is talking about two important things, first a STOCK car from a dealer and the COST of the car.

BMWs awesome, but you also pay for luxury features. My business partner just bought a M6. It's very nice, HUD display, carbon fiber everywhere. I just bought a STI for about 25% of what he paid. That M6 does 4.2 in 0-60 not much faster than the STI (stock with out a ECU flash).

There will always be faster cars in a straight line and also on a track. The question I think one must judge is that for a stock car out of the dealership and for the money, how many cars are actually better performers than an STI? I think there might be one or two, but the STI will certainly be in the hunt.

As my friend who is a race driver - the only things he added was brake pads, ecu flash, new rubber and a sway bar to stiffen it up. He hasn't even done a single engine mod and he said it doesn't need it if you are going to track it. Of course tracking a car and drag racing are two completely different things.

Throttle should come on smoothly while exiting a corner.

+1 /agree

Can't to compare STi to M3 and ignore the 2X price tag.

Haa haa haa haa.... thats good comedy.

No - he was in the U.S. Le Mans series and now races in the Rolex Daytona Proto-types.

I am sure if he raced in the LeMONS the advice would be significantly different... :-0

Just find an SRT4 and beat everything. SRT4, anyone? Anyone? I haven't actually seen one in what seems like years. They must have all at some point got trapped in some sort of temperal vortex from being so fast.

I just think they're all in the junk-yard. Re-entry is a bitch.

You're right though, don't see many on the road anymore.

ah yes re-entry. Wow the SRT4 was something, almost more legendary than VTEC. I remember at one point it seemed like every single automotive online forum had threads dedicated to the myth and legend of the SRT4, often venturing off into the SRT4 forums themeselves, where there were hundreds of threads with titles like, "Which is teh fast3r color?", or "Stage 4 or 5 for 11 sec qtr?", and of course, "I raced and beat (fast car here) by (number) bus lengths, from a (mph or gear) roll".

Very true. They were the civic SI to american high school boys. Can't deny it though, they were ahead of their time when talking about just speed.

In that vein, check the One Lap of America results from the past couple of years... Specifically, 10th overall from 2012 and both 7th and 10th from 2011. Some fast little old Hondas with skilled drivers.

I'm sure cutting off a roof of a Lamborghini is not much of a cost if it meant keeping 1 million fans and each of those fans gave you a dollar.

It's entertainment, Batman crashed a brand new Lamborghini for Dark Knight, but it was worth it because the movie did well and made money. And plus I bet that wrecked Lamborghini could be sold for its original retail or more since it's a part of movie history.

I'm sure he wouldn't do any of those crazy things if it were out of his pocket. At least he tears a roof off his own Lamborghini and not my cars for my entertainment. If it were some kid on Youtube who did this and got no money out of it except a million views from pissed off people, then that's a complete retard.

M3 bmws are not that fast. And to get a edge on one over another is going to be a skilled driver. Most here can't push their cars 85% without ending up in a ditch. I drove a s/c m3 and I was disappointed. Course my subaru when it runs was fairly quick. Even a lotus exige was not able to out corner me. And straights forget about it.

I think on bone stock cars its a draw. Awd and good torque vs rwd good power. Comes down to a good driver.

Oh and its also a draw on bmw oil leaks or broken subaru pistons. But for day to day cost the subaru kills the bmw.

I disagree with people who think the M3 isn't fast.

Chances are the M3 driver is short shifting, after about 70mph, the M3 starts to really move.

Well I have been wrenching on them for a while in all sorts of different stages. The only M car to have is a m5 with a upgraded clutch. The m5 has everything the m3 has but is better in every way. If you wanted a bmw toy 1m would be best. Otherwise M5 hands down.

That sounds like a bunch of bull ****. Let's be honest, you wrench on them while playing PS3.

And, just by your comment about the M5 and M3, and the 1M show how completely full of **** you are...
