Question TD04 leaking oil, what other potential problems?

I am very new on here, and I don't really know too much about Subaru engines or their cars for that matter.

I am looking at buying a 2004 Forester XT with 120k miles. However, its turbo is leaking oil so I am getting a pretty big discount from the dealer. ($1200)
I found a few used TD04s without any shaft play for around $150, and I am assuming that the replacement job would be pretty easy to do, but I am concerned that if the turbo is leaking oil this could be a sign of other problems.

So, does anyone know if this could be a symptom of some other major problem?

Thanks so much!
John-Paul

P.S. I am planning on getting leakdown and compression tests done first if I decide to buy it.

There could be issues other then the turbo going bad, 120k miles is a lot of miles so there could be issues.

Personally I would wait for a better deal and walk away from the forester, could be buying someone else's problem.

Thanks Boostedbob!

Due to financial reasons, this car is all that I can afford. However on the positive side, it is a one owner, is in really good physical condition, and I can have it for $7200 out the door.

I don't want to just disregard your advice about walking away from it, but I am going into it realizing that is has quite a few miles on it and that I can expect to have to fix things every now and then as well as do a complete timing belt job as soon as I get it. However I have done quite a bit of shopping around and this seems to be a good deal.

I guess I just want to make sure that I am not being stupid buying a car with a leaking turbo.

Thanks!
John-Paul

It's all good, I would start saving money when you do get it, just for a rainy day.

Since your going to do the timing belt, you might as well do the water pump and pulleys, maybe the thermostat as well to be on the safe side. Rallysportdirect.com has some good prices on kits.
