wait what? stock 2005 wrx is 205/55-16 thats almost 2" diameter and 5" circumference more than stock

You're kidding right? It's pretty basic math.
205/50/16 - 24.07" 245/45/18 - 26.68" Even if you compared it to a newer sti... The diameter difference is still over 1" taller than the 245/40/18. The only way I could see that making sense, is comparing it to forester fitment. Which you didn't mention, nor was it discussed in this thread. This thread has been discussing impreza fitment.
