Default Howling noise when cold out

Looking to see if anyone has any idea what this could be. Car is a 2011 impreza outback sport. On cold startups when I start to drive, I get this howling noise from the engine compartment. It happens right around 2-3K rpms, goes away during the higher rpms, and goes away completely once the car is warmed up. Any idea what this could be? I even wonder if it could be the transmission??

Yea, car is an automatic. I don't think it's the belts, I'm really starting to think it is something maybe transmission related. Ill bring it up next time I'm at the dealer for the mileage checkup and see what they say.

this use to happen in our mazda mpv. it was the throttle plate that would be cold and kinda didn't shut all the way so the air being sucked would kinda whistle or howl that noise until the plate was warm and moving again. wd40 that plate after taking off ur intake completely.

well for me it happens even when car is hot, and as i said since day 1. i also noticed the same when i rented an impreza in Hawaii which was a sort of hot place. from my experiments while monitoring oil solenoid duty cycle, the howling occurred at the same time i got the lights. so this might be related to high lift Cam switching lobes (anywhere between 1500-3000rpm at over 80% engine load).

this is considering that we are both hearing the same sound.
