Default The 2013 Grand Am Thread...

Figured it was time to have a Grand Am thread for this season since the Roar before the 24 is today. It's been raining and thank dog I stayed home this year.

Since there isn't a whole lot to talk about right now with it raining, here's a link to the new class announcement for 2014 season following the ALMS merger:

It will be interesting to see what they do to try to equalize the performance between the DP's and the LMP2 cars. The DP's are currently quite a bit slower (~7 sec per lap at Mid-Ohio last year, that's almost 10%), and go about achieving lap time in different ways.

Well it sucks there's no P1 class, but it's understandable. Good news to me though is the Delta wing has been given legitimacy in this new series. I'm looking forward to that rather mixed class. Very cool race car.

Hope they don't have a 10-race schedule. I'd like to see them race as much as F1 does. Not as much as NASCAR, but not as little as ALMS currently does would be ideal.

There was some testing at Daytona a couple of months ago with the DP's and P2 cars. As they sit, the DP cars are fairly heavily restricted, and by removing most of the restriction, they were able to get them close enough to the P2 lap times to justify putting them in the same class.

From the team side, with the budgets, anything more than a 15 race season puts a tremendous strain on the teams from the financial side. I'm not sure how the tie in with Le Mans will work, but I would guess that in 2014 nearly all of the races will be headlined by the new series, and most will be at major US circuits that are on either one or both of the schedules. I would pretty much guaruntee that the Daytona 24, Sebrig 12 hour, Watkins Glen 6 hour, and Petit Le Mans will all be on the combined schedule, along with races at Road America, Laguna Seca, CotA, Mid Ohio, and Lime Rock. That's 9 races right there, and I'd also put very high probabilities of races at Mosport, VIR, and Barber as well.

Yes, it rained friday morning, but Saturday and Sunday were beautiful.

Here's a pic from night practice Saturday.

I could see the DP cars being fazed out over a few years, The cost cap on LMP2 and with the way the regs change for FIA/ACO for 2014 there are going to be more options becoming available to teams.

I also think Daytona, Sebring and Petit should also have invite system in place for LMP1 to add to the excitment of the big 3.

On track in a week. We've got two cars running this year, both in the new GX Class. Bullet Racing is running a Cayman instead of a Cup, and we are also sponsoring BGB's entry. Nothing in GT for me this year.

Flights, hotels and tickets are sorted. Looking forward to going back to the 24hr this year. Give me a scanner and few beers and I'm good all night. Good luck Kevin and Matt!

I'd rather see 6 10 hour races, tbh, but we all know that can't happen. Too many races with varying lengths can be killer on a budget.

Thanks!

If you want to stop by and say hi, I'm usually bored out of my mind between about noon and 2:30 on Saturday before the Rolex race starts. I also have help this weekend, so it should be pretty easy going, at least until about an hour into the 24.

PS: The long range weather forcast looks beautiful. Highs in the low 70's, lows in the mid 50's throughout the week, only a small chance of rain.

Cost capped LMP2 cars are cheaper from everything I read and DP cars are not going to get the Le Mans invite that the ALMS/NASCAR say they want to keep.

Kevin,
I'll come see you. I didn't obligate myself to crew this year, so I'll be pretty free to roam.

Cool, I'll see y'all there. Matt, it'll be nice to chat with you for a few minutes in a situation where a handshake doesn't involve an exchange of gear oil and brake dust like last time.

Our pit stall is just after start-finish, right next to victory lane. I'm expecting to set up a couple of EZ-Ups on the cold side of the pit lane fence where I'll be managing the tire program during the race.

Depressed I cant go to the 24 this year. I had everything ready to drive down and camp and a last second trip to China was scheduled for the race weekend

I'll be watching over the interwebs though! Racing's almost back! Good luck

The GX class will be interesting to watch at Daytona and beyond, see how fast the cars really are. Seems right now that they are about the speed of the fast GS cars. Conti looks as strong as ever and lots of new cars in the series with the Astons and some more Porches. My tryout last year worked out and was picked up by Roush to race for the #51 car so I'll be in that all year. See you guys out there.

^^ You're going to drive for Roush huh?? GOOD JOB!!

Does anyone know if the Subaru BRZ and/or Scion FR-S is going to be fielded in the Conti series ST class?? I would think it's a good fit and could do really well.

During the broadcast of the last race of the year last year they mentioned Scion would be running an FRS in the st class but I haven't heard anything about it since then.

We are going to be very publicly debuting them at the race in both Bullet's and BGB's Caymans. The class was created so late we haven't managed to finish desiging our sequential gearbox for the platform, but we do have the ring and pinions now, after 18 months of product development.

Rebel Rock has a couple of FRS's that they are doing development work on for ST. I'm providing the LSD for the car, but don't expect to see it until really late this season or maybe even next season. GA rulemaking is a bit of a challenge and unless they get approved for a seriously built motor or a blower the car won't be competitive. Most of us are crossing our fingers on a TRD blower kit coming into production that will then make the GA rules guys let it in.

Kevin, I'll try to come see you though I managed to let myself get wrangled into doing some crew work. Tires actually.

Rough day. Between the two teams I works most closely with, we had two crashes, a blown gearbox and a blown engine. We think all will be repaired and both the 24 and tomorrow's Conti race will see the cars present and accounted for. Though a few of them will be starting DFL. But I'm crossing my fingers on Pumpelly's skills. If anyone can run a car through the field from the back and put it on the podium it is that guy. Watch for him in BGBs car that went into the wall hard after a scuffle with Roush's Mustang.

We did opt to remove the short ratio ring and pinion from the Caymans. One ate itself after only 5 laps. While I test by racing, that's just not right. I will be going back to my engineer and figuring out what is wrong with the design. Failure only occurs when you quit trying. I'm not ashamed to say it wasn't right the first time, and it definitely isn't right enough to hang a 24 hour effort on it.

Speaking of being wrong, I spoke to Jim Jonsin today, Rebel Rock Racing has resumed development of the FRS that they got from Scion. We'll be supplying them with an LSD next week out of our stash of prototypes. In the meantime here's a little eye candy. The car is on display in the Conti paddock. Sorry my iphone lens was dirty...

I drove by the FRS today, but didn't get a very close look at it. It looked good from a distance, though.
