Default 2007 2.5i Muffler Whistle

My 2007 Impreza 2.5i has about 63,000 miles, and I have a loud muffler whine/squeal/sqeak, etc. At very low RPM's, when the motor lugs (when talking off sometimes) or at high revs (above 4k) the muffler has a loud whistle. It sounds like a turbo. Anyway, I've heard that this is relatively common, and the only way to fix this is by getting a new muffler. Now, I don't mind something slightly louder than stock. Am I better off getting an aftermarket? I'm assuming it'll be cheaper, and better flowing.

Thanks

And now for a serious response, any 02-07 turbo muffler section will bolt right on. I intend on getting a used STI unit when mine dies.

Our 2004 Forester does the same exactly when you go above 3k. Apparently the baffles in the muffler are screwed up. 150k though.

Is your gas mileage hurt at all? Ours is really low, even with a new cat and front O2 sensor.

Thanks for the help and humor. My gas mileage isn't good right now because its winter time (warming up, snow-drifting) but before the snow, I was getting 27-29mpg around where I live on country roads.

Thanks

Yeah, we get about 16-18, city driving, hills, etc.

What you're getting is excellent. I got that with my 2.2 on the highway only.
