Hmmm, it would be interesting to see if a Limited is noticeably quieter than a Premium. Not that I've had any problem with the noise levels in my Sport Premium. But if it was easy and cheap to make it quieter, I'd be interested in that.

By the way, sorry for hijacking this thread. I just never knew that Limiteds had extra sound deadening materials until I saw Jsteg's photos.

The transmission in my forester xt is much noisier than my Impreza. I'd be curious to see how many people with cvts have it, even base models. So far, the only people that have said they have it have cvts but also have limiteds.

When they started my oil consumption test the second time, they used the blue Honeywell filter.
Until now they were using the black tokyo roki's. I know the blue ones are spec'd now, just sharing.

Just did my first oil change on the new Impreza. Found a few filter options at local stores, went with K&N.

Before my last oil change, I decided to try a different oil filter from the tokyo roki 160 so I ordered a microGreen filter from amazon. I wanted to see how clean their dual stage microfilter will keep the oil. It claims to capture particles down to 2 microns. I forgot to take a picture of the dipstick before the last oil change so I could do a side by side visual @ 5,000 miles. I've got an 5K UOA sample to send off from the previous oil change and I need to request another kit for this one. Anyway, here's a picture of the dipstick after 4,580 miles and the filter.......

It will be interesting to see the results of your UOA and perhaps a dissection of the used filter as well. I assume this filter is vehicle-specific regarding MY & bypass valve opening pressure vs. "if it screws on, it should work"? May end up going this route since it sounds like my first dealer oil change will be rather spendy.

My goodness, that's an expensive filter:

http://www.amazon.com/microGreen-MG1017-101-7-Oil-Filter/dp/B007USGKGS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1374584581&sr=8-5&keywords=microgreenhttp://www.amazon.com/microGreen-MG1017-101-7-Oil-Filter/dp/B007USGKGS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1374584581&sr=8-5&keywords=microgreen

For half that price I can buy the excellent FRAM XG7317 filter (in bulk) on eBay:

For the microgreen:

"By continuously filtering a small portion of the engine oil through the patented microfilter system, the microGreenŽ filtration system allows your vehicle to operate up to 30,000 miles without changing the engine oil. "

If that's true, $15 is a good price. But Id be weary using the same oil and filter for 30k... For peace of mind alone Ill spend a little extra and change the oil/filter every 7.5k.

The key words that always raise red flags when I read them are "up to".

+1 regarding your 7.5k OCI, regardless of brand of oil and filter. I don't see myself ever exceeding 7.5k, even if the FRAM XG7317 is claimed to last longer than that. I'll pay $7.50/oil change to install a new filter. It's worth just the peace of mind alone.

That piece of insulation on my STI was something like $80.00... I had to replace it because some mice started to shred it on me since I don't drive the car daily.

Yes, it is expensive. For what it could do, like an alternative to a more expensive oil bypass system, just thought I would try it at least once and see how it works. That Fram XG filter looks good too.

Oh, I don't plan on going to 30, 20 or 15,000 miles on this oil. If this filter can take out particles down to 2 micron and keep the oil clean via UOA, I may buy it again and go to 7.5K or 10K miles. Otherwise, I got two Roki 160's left and then it's XG7317 time...

Sounds like that could decrease oil pressure

The other phrase that should grab your attention is "down to", as in:

Quote:
The microGreen filter is unique in that it captures the small particles down to 2 microns in size.
I could not find an efficiency rating at 2 microns on their site.

The Amsoil EaBP series of bypass filters has an efficiency rating of 98.7% at 2 microns. I have one installed on another vehicle. It holds a quart of oil by itself and the flow through it is about 1tsp/sec if that tells you anything.

The somewhat high initial cost is offset by a 60K mi service life.

So not only did I pay a lot to have the dealer change the oil and service/inspect the vehicle, they also used the blue Honeywell filter. Apparently, the Foresters still get the TRs for their oil changes at this dealer. Decided to take matters into my own hands and pocket the cash difference.
Would it be too much ask for a list of oil filters for the 2.0 2012+ Impreza with brand/model number posted in the (first page of) this thread?

And that XG7317 actually does look pretty good...

Every bad thing you ever heard about FRAM does not apply to this filter. I've done a lot of reading about it, and it's considered excellent by everyone.

I already have the fumoto valve and its awesome. Every time I lift the car to change the oil with the jack stands, I always have a small fear of the car coming crashing down on me

Just had my 15K service done at 13.5K and it was 6K on the oil itself.

Well it was early on the miles but a little late by way of the calendar. (lots of short trips) Anywho... They put on one of the blue (HW) filters. It seems just a touch smaller in diameter than the black (TR) ones .

I guess we will see if there is any significant areas of difference on the next UOA. Still NO oil consumption issues either :knockonwood: Hopefully there will be none with this blue filter either.

I have free OCIs till May of next year, so I figure about 2 more before I start to do my own.

I have already stocked up several black filters. I have the Fumoto valve already so I'm ready to .

My fear when using ramps is that when driving up onto the ramps the car will spit the ramps out and land on top of them. I had that happen to me decades ago, after which I swore off ramps when raising a FWD car. But maybe the incline on the ramps shown here is more gradual than it was on my old steel ramps, and wouldn't be a problem.
