Post Anyone live in Dahlgren/Fredericksburg area of VA?

Well I got a programming job with the Navy in the Surface Warfare division and I'll be moving down to that area and I was wondering if anyone is from around there. Also how is the area? I've lived by NYC most of my life and I'm kinda worried about the difference between the 2. Is there stuff to do in Fredericksburg?

I used to live there. There's a HUGE difference between the two areas. It's a quiet, rural area. Pretty southern. It can be trashy, but it's full of history. I graduated from a college in Fredericksburg, and as a CS major, I could have persued a job at Dahlgren but decided to move back to DC because of the better (IMO) quality of life.

It has a lot of pluses, though. The countryside is beautiful, DC and Richmond are within an hour's drive, and there's no traffic. Plus, if you're a history buff, you'll love visiting all the sites in the area. If you enjoy the outdoors, there's plenty to do as well. If you're looking for urban culture, you'll be hard pressed to find it in Fredericksburg. Come and visit DC occasionally for your fix. But if you're looking for small town charm with some of the ammenities of a moderately-sized city, Fredericksburg is a good place to be.

One word of warning. You'll see a lot of rednecks and confederate flags. They're generally pretty harmless, but there is a bit of an identity crisis going on down there, and sometimes the old south persona dominates to more modern, suburban persona. I'm sure you'll be taken aback at first, as was my g/f from NJ. Another 30 minutes north towards DC and that will all disappear.

Feel free to PM me with any specific questions you may have. I'll be more than happy to help.

Are you going to be stationed at Dalhgren? I think that's how you spell it. I grew up there (ages 5-10). They have a nice golf course, but NO night life. It's a pretty nice area as far as landscape, river, ect. But don't plan on having any wild fun times (except maybe in your car). They've built up the area there a bit since I lived there (early 80's). There are places to shop off base and some fast food, ect. Come up to DC or down to Richmond for clubs and girls. Those King George county girls are .... questionable????

Good luck!

Hey guys
thanks for the reply
=/ not exactly what I wanted to hear but I guess DC or Richmond aren't too far away.

Lurking, I won't be stationed on base since it's a civillian job.

Anyway I officially accepted the offer, now it's a matter of when I move down there.
Hope it's not gonna be a hard transition.

If you are stationed at the Base, Southern Maryland has alot of the day to day stuff, and is definitly closer than DC/Richmond. Small toll coming across the bridge, and hoonestly, as bad as the traffic in Waldorf is, its better than 95 thru NVA. MIR holds some big import drag events, and weekly racing too, and is only 15 minutes from the 301 bridge by the base. Good seafood around too, much better than in the city. Try Capt. Billy's and Capt. Johns, great crabs. Consider a boat to get the most out of the area you'll be in.
