Hey fellow i-clubers.
I got a goofy question. It's kinda tricky because you'll have to take the stereo out to help me. But I'd be extremely grateful if you could help me. I'm posting here because I'm assuming some of you might be installing new HUs pretty soon. Maybe you can take a look for me while you are doing your install. Here's the problem: The cup holder, in my opinion, is in a bad location. If anything, it shouldn't be used to hold drinks if you have a nice stereo installed. On two or three occasions, I think I spilled a little coke or gatorade on the cup holder. Not knowing the full extent of my mess, I didnt bother to thoroughly clean my car. Just wiped up the spill. I bought the Alpine 7878 and it's been giving me lots of problems with overheating and other known retarded issues. I took my car in to get serviced (not for the radio) and suddenly, my CD player won't work!!! So I decided to do some investigating and I was horrified. I had spilled coke and whatever all over the inside of my stereo area and many other places!!! I had sticky dried up coke spots EVERYWHERE!!! So I take EVERYTHING apart to clean it...and here's my question... I noticed in the air conditioning unit under the stereo, there was a sticky brown substance in the plastic gears for the knobs. My guess was that it was more dried up coke, but then I thought about it and if I had spilled coke on my car, my stereo would have blocked it from getting on my air conditioning gears. So rather than wipe it up, I am asking if someone can check to see if the brown sticky stuff is suppose to be there. Or are the gears clean white plastic. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me.

There is grease on the moving parts of the HVAC controls, put there by the factory. You should be able to tell the difference between that and any dried Coke that is in there.

the substance is light brown and sticky. I would think grease would be like crisco.
But like I said in my original post, the brown stuff is perfectly on both dials so it looked to perfect for an "accidental" spill. |

The grease that is used in there is thick and sticky so it stays put since the mechanism is exposed.
