Thumbs up A'PEXi Power Intake for WRX

My post from CLUB WRX:

Part I
FIRST IMPRESSIONS!
okay! Install took about 30 minutes, it should have only taken 10 minutes, but the Mariners game is on...anyway, started it up, couldn't hear anything at first. So I pulled out of the driveway and onto the street. First launch (3k)? And wow! The noise factor is the most noticeable thing! I've never heard suction like this. It's just weird, but I like. I can hear the turbo spool a little better, but the two interesting noises are:
the airflow travel. It just sounds, well, weird! I had intake on my Camry, MR-2, and Integra, but it was just a standard "hissss". The A'PEXi has a mechanical weeze to it. Almost like you are blowing into a bottle/higher pitched howl. So yes, it's a howl, not a whistle! Oh and the intake resonator and duct is still in place btw.

2nd interesting sound: The engine/exhaust tone. I still have the stock exhaust and catted up-pipe. But the tone it makes now is like stock noise x4? It sounds like a combo of my friend's mustang and Armin's car when it pulls away. It's not so much exhaust tone, but engine sound.

The only other thing I notice is the engine's idle. After my 10 minute drive, I took out the key and let the timer count down. The parked/idle 'shake' is gone, and all I hear is a hum.

Part II
Well, the directions are all in Japanese for the A'PEXi Power Intake Kit. I can read the hiragana and katakana, but the Kanji is all f'd up. Anyway, just using the illustration, it took me half an hour. It would've been quicker but I kept running up and down the stairs to watch the Mariners game. When I first took everything out of the box, I numbered the polybags according to the illustrated diagram, so that I wouldn't have to go flipping back and forth on the 4 page instruction sheet. Super easy. Almost as easy as installing my hoodscoop without directions. A small child could have installed it, just make sure your engine has cooled down enough. All the tools ya need are a small Philips head, a ratchet with 10mm and 12mm sockets, and a 10 inch socket extension for the 2 bolts holding the OEM airbox.

Oh yeah, they also include two 2' foam strips with self-adhesive backing. This is applied to the left side of the engine bay (starting and the passenger-side strut-mount, all the way to the radiator brace). I guess so that water doesn't come into contact.

Where and how much did you pay for it, I am intrested. Plus any drawbacks to this intake like fooling the MAF sensor like the AEM CAI.

Well, I might as well post here too....heh.

I got a CEL a few days after, but it only lasted a few hours. I didn't get it scanned, but I'm guessing the ECU thinks it's running lean. It went away on its own however. A few days later, it came on again, but it was right after I washed the car, so I'm guessing some moisture might have collected? Again, it cleared up on its own, and it's running fine now. As soon as get my hands on an S-AFC or AFR, any further issues should be taken care of.

I got it for a good price since my friend lives in Japan, and he got it thru a shop that's been taking care of my STi parts. A'PEXi USA should be coming out with one for $188, like the rest of their Power Intake Kits. I got mine for about $135 + $40 for shipping. Still cheaper than most kits. I believe you can get it for the same price from Takakaira, but I'm not familiar with their shipping charges....

As for the snorkel and air duct, I kept it in their because that's what the installation instructions recommend. I'm still contemplating about removing them, but the instructions also provide tuning settings for the S-AFC. I figure if they recommend it and have tested it, then I'm not taking them out. Who know though, I may change my mind tomorrow...

i think u got a CEL b/c like the blitz intakes the diameter of the intake pipe is a few mm off. so slightly more air than the US spec size WRX's ,

i am not definite but this is from the blitz experience and they did a recall cause the early intakes they sold to the US were Jspec WRX so it was slightly wider.

Yeah, I think you are right. But since I got a JDM kit, I'm out of luck. Either way, the CEL light hasn't shown for about a week now. So hopefully the ECU's all caught up.

You are right. I don't remember the measurements, but I had the Blitz and Apexi side by side last winter, I measured and the apexi is bigger. Runs fine on my car, no cel.
