NOTE: Do this at your own risk, not responsible if you break something.
First, take the headlights off the car. Then remove any rubber on the light. Then remove all screws and bulbs, wiring harness. Keep in mind you have to bake your headlights one at a time. I did mine for 20 minutes at 250• degrees. Once the lens is separated from the assembly. The rest is pretty easy. I will post pictures as soon as I upload them to my photo bucket account. My donor vehicle was in an accident and the pictures of the headlight is a sample that I am using. Some areas are cracked or broken and NOT a result of me opening the headlight assembly.

I will have to finish the posting from home and edit the captions since I am doing all this from my iPhone.

This is actually easier than you think. I would suggest wearing gloves all the time while working on the headlights, you don't want to be cleaning up fingerprints before you seal everything back up. The hardest part which took a little bit more effort was opening the light. Everything else was a piece of cake. I first I doubted my ability to do this, but thanks to JDMSTA and 06SE for walking us through the process, and all others who contributed with their input. BTW, never place the lens on any surface, lay a towel under it so it does not get scratched. Here are some more pictures from my iPhone:

This is a four part headlight :

The Lens
The Cosmetic Cover
The Reflector Bowl
The Assembly Back Cover

The only part that you need to Dremel is the reflector bowl, that is the part that the bulbs mount to. In our case the H11 base needs to be made bigger to accept the 2DS projector or a H1 projector. With the H1 there is a lot less to cut, but, I wanted a standard H.I.D. Capsule, so I decided to go with the D2S setup.

Here is the reflector bowl, I made it wider to accept the D2S projector, it was easier than you think, my Dremel ate through the plastic like butter, I kinda messed up a little bit in the circle on the left. But it is no big deal since there is room for error. But it's not too bad of an error, the projector will cover that up.

Awesome man! Thanks much for the detailed write-up and pics! Still have to muster up the sac, and money, to do this to my own headlamps.

There are a lot more pictures to come!

Side view, I am waiting on the correct size shroud, the one they shipped does not fit over the lens.

The Plan is to install some BMW halo's around the outside of the almost round circle instead of the tradition halo around the projector lens. Something like this picture here, noticed that its a CCFL halo and not a SMD. I think SMD are brighter than CCFL. And they do not require a transformer either.

Ran into another problem, I just got the new porsche cayenne shroud and they are way too big, for my application.

gonna have to go back and use my original shrouds and make them fit somehow, a lot of cutting of the shroud will be needed to make this work, these are the gatling gun shroud.

Here is a shot with the SMD's SMT halo on. These are going to be my day time running lights, I guess they will come on with the high beam circuit, not sure if they would be on when the high beams are at FULL voltage, a little experimenting with the wiring will take care of that.

This is just an example on how much smaller the H1 is compared to the 2DS type projector, as you can see from the Mini Gatling Gun Shroud and the Cayenne Style for 2.5" -3.0" projectors.

Default Thank You So Much

I've been waiting for a post like this since I got my impreza - wow this was an amazingly informative post. I think I'm finally ready to pull the trigger for an HID retrofit - at least for my low beams, not sure what I want to do about the high beams yet.

Which relays did you have to buy to make it work?

Thanks again for the awesome post!

I wired the solenoid of the projector to the high beam + positive feed. This would allow the high beams to be turn on or off and give you bi-xenon effect of the projector. It's pretty easy to do to be honest.
