Rebuild My EJ207 Options (If OAHU resident Look!!)
So the other night my OBX Adjustable Cam Gear on the passenger side snapped. I will attach pictures at the bottom. Being that I am not familiar with Subaru engines, I figured I would look into getting the motor built by a local Subaru Guru named Chad on Oahu. From what I have heard he is the local hero when it comes to Subaru motor builds, and he has quite a few Subarus himself.
My car is a 2002 WRX with an EJ207 motor and has an STI Turbo as well as STI injectors. Here is a breakdown of pricing from his quote. Option 1 No short block work Labor - $1,700 Necessary Parts
Optional Full Build
Now, from what I have read about the same type of damage happening to a motor I would need to do block work. I'm almost positive the pistons are shot as well as the valves. I figured that while the motor was out getting the head re-done, I would invest some money into the block making it stronger than stock internals. I wish I had the knowledge, time, space and tools to do this project myself but I don't. Was wondering from an expert's point of view if this is a smart decision to just cough up the 4500$ and pretty much have a brand new motor. Here is an attachment of the damaged OBX adjustable cam gears.

His labor cost is almost as much as an OEM short block. Not sure if u have the means to install it but throwing it out there. U would then need a tune

In my opinion, if you are considering short block work, you should look at some of the built blocks available for around 3000-3500 (plus shipping) from reputable builders.
Not saying your local dude is not, but you would end up with a new case, crank, rods etc for around the same price AND have your old block as a spare. |

I spoke to the Subaru dealership here, and they said for a new block it would be 3500$..
They also said that they would not touch the car because it has been modified?.. It just has an STI Turbo and injectors.. Im speaking to another shop to get a cost comparrison right now. The only thing I dont like about going with this guy is that there is no warranty at all. |

FORGET about the dealerships. Here is one of the best prices you will find on an OEM shortblock. Of course you will need to get all the other bits.
Flatirons Tuning STI Shortblock He only needs a new oil cooler and pump if something sent pieces of metal through the engine. Sure they need to be cleaned, but I would not drop $400 without a good reason!! Same goes for oil pan, although I would replace the pickup as a precaution. |

Here is an option from a great local shop, and it is a 2.5 with pistons approirpate for your 2.0l heads
http://www.licmotorsports.com/produc...wrx_lic-sb-b15 Rallispec has a good block for $3500 http://rallispec.com/prod_block.htm Those are just a few that come to mind. But if you are not pushing too much power, I would just stick with an OEM block...although your heads will present you with a compression ratio issue. |
