Exclamation Always Look Left, then Right Before Entering Intersection!

Here is a situation that happened over the weekend.

My mom, dad, pregnant wife, and I were driving home from eating dinner Saturday night. I was driving my pops 2010 Dodge Ram. We came upon a intersection, just like normal, to a red light. The road was three lanes wide and we were in the middle lane and the first car up front. The light turned green and I have a habit of looking left, then right, and usually left again to make sure people are stopping as they should. My pops is a Detective so he embeds all these safety rules in us.

So this time I looked left, right, and left while I slowly started moving forward through our green light. At the corner of my left eye, I noticed this car not slowing down at all. The front end was still balanced and didn't look like they were intending on hitting the brakes. I slammed my brakes and said "OH ****" as this car was moving fast to the intersection. Unfortunately, the 2012 Nissan Maxima on the right side of us kept moving. The lady barely passed our front bumper and railed the car to our right.

Overall, the thousand times I looked left, right, and left I have never came across a red light runner. Let's just say this time worked out perfect. My father saved a headache with the insurance companies, none of us were injured, and my pregnant wife and I didn't get clobbered by the car since we were both on the left hand side.

As for the other car, they were fine but definitely shaken. The red light runner tried to lie and say she didn't run the red light. Too bad for her we stayed and gave our testimony.

Be safe guys/gals.

this just happened to me yesterday on my lunch break! verry scary indeed, i almost lost my suby, not to mention any injuries that may have occured. i was fortunate enough to see it coming and floor it just in time for the red light runner to fly through the intersection behind me, just missing me. i didnt look till i was already pulling out, so it was too late to stop, instead i had to just gun it. be careful out there everyone! serious dumbassess on the road these days

The road in front of my office is a busy six lane (three north, three south) road and is notorious for red light runners. When traversing that busy street at a new green, I'll let the cars to either side of me go first and wait to see what happens. I've seen three near misses.

Damned the driver of the maxima for trying to lie. Glad everyone is safe and extra points to you for staying behind and giving your testimony.

I do this even when I'm not the one driving.

It's just become a habit of mine, now.

Glad you guys are all safe.

I was DD on New Years with three drunk people in my car. I was completely sober. I stopped at a red light, saw the road was clear, then went right through it. My very drunk friend in the passenger seat says, "Dude...you just ran a red light." I said, "No, I didn't, it was a blinking..." right as I was looking the rear view and seeing a solid red circle shining at me. "Ohhhhhh dammnit." Not one of my prouder moments, to say the least, but I'm not sure if he remembered it the next day. The other two people in the car definitely didn't.

CN: Sometimes I run red lights for fun.

EDIT: also, good story. No, really. I enjoyed reading it.

I NEVER run red lights on accident. Then again, I'm an old fart so I'm exempt.

I live in the middle of ****ing nowhere. I won't lie. If it's 2:00 A.M. and there's no headlights in sight I'll run a red light or two, but if there's even a glimpse of someone in any direction I won't.

Back in 2008 I saw my parents and younger brother get t-boned by a guy going 40-50mph in a '79 Chevy 1-ton pickup truck who blew through the red light. They were car number 3 to go through the green. My bf, sister, and I were in the car right behind them.

Their car was an Outback (minor injuries). A week before that I got rear ended in my Impreza, and the week before that my bf's WRX was damaged by hail. All three cars went to the same shop too. The day before my parents' wreck the guy at the shop warned us that bad things happen in 3's.

Years ago I was the 3rd or 4th car back from a red left turn arrow.
The arrow turned green and the 1 (and maybe 2nd car) proceeded through the intersection.
The car directly in front of me got BLASTED by a car coming the opposite direction (still had a red light since the green arrow was lit) they barely slowed down.

It was a rental car driven by someone who didn't speak English and could not indicate ANY understanding of traffic laws (or even the color of the light on their side) All partied were ok, but the rental was destroyed. The turning vehicle (an older f150) had a side exhaust that was bent to hell and a bit of bed damage but was only cosmetic damage.

When I still had my learner's permit and my mom was driving in the passenger seat I started to go through a light after it had just turned green. She yelled at me to hit the brakes in one of those tones you just don't question and so I slammed on them. A car blasted through the intersection a split second later going at least 50 missing me by inches.

Not the way I would have liked to learn to look both ways before going through an intersection but I definitely do it every time now.

I can't stress no matter how safe you feel any specific intersection is, never forget the left-right-left check. Recently I was driving my older car one sunny day (75 Corvette), only car up front at a typically uncongested two-lane T intersection, turning left.
This was the one time I forget to do the check here after hundreds of times in the past. Light turns green and I begin to pull out and in the corner of my eye spot a car to my left coming right at me, they then nose dive, slamming on the brakes and lock them maybe 15 feet away? Caught in the moment I hit the gas and escape getting hit in the side, just barely.
After seriously lucking out big time I finish the turn and look back and they are cruising on through their red light like it's just another day. Never again!

Wow dude that's wild. Similar situation here in Metro Detroit last week killed 3 people. Intersections freak me out. You are always at the mercy of others in an intersection. Glad everyone was ok

Fellow rider here with the same habit. The thing that scares me the most now is when my light turns red (actually yellow first around here) and there is a car behind me. First thing I do is check my mirrors to see if the nose is lifting so he can run the red (and plow into me in the process). I know of two riders this has happened to.

What kind of retard doesn't notice a motorcycle directly in front of them?

That's why I will never ride a motorcycle or drive an unsafe car (e.g. miata). You can be the best driver in the world but all it takes it one person not paying attention to kill you.

Yeah its an awesome habit to have. Unfortunately, around here we have ******* motorcycle riders. You will see cars sporting the "watch out for motorcycles" bumper stickers but 80% of the riders around here just wheelie and fly by you hauling ass. Another thing I hate is when riders are on my ass on the road. I don't break check but I sure do let my car coast to a steady 35mph.

Agree. Motorcycle deaths are common around here.

Its a good thing your car had the throttle response to get the heck out of the way. Yeah I always thought to myself if this habit would ever yield any situation where it came in handy...well I am glad to say it did.
