Default 2004 vs 2006 STI engine, harness, ECU?

I'm working on a custom build and I need to know what exact differences there are between a 2004 and 2006 STI engine, harness and ECU.

I'm getting a lot of cross/misinformation and I look forward to reviewing this information.

Thank you for the assistance.

04 = No immobilizer, harness is made up of 3 major sections and 1 engine harness.
05+ = Has immobilizer, made up of 2 main sections and 1 engine harness. You will need the vin number of the vehicle that the ECU came from to make a working ignition key!
06 = Introduction of the air pump system; requires a different engine harness than previous years. Also all the same differences that the 05 got pertain to this harness as well, meaning immobilizer system etc.

There are some other differences;
- More Air bag components on the 06+
- Pin outs are slightly different on some connectors
- 06+ has the Air pump system and you will need one of the control valves to properly measure barometric pressure. Yes, it is needed and required for the ECU to function properly!

This has been gone over many different times on many forums! Please use the search and google search for further info!

06 sti does not have an air pump. It did not appear until 07 in the USDM market

the WRX however did have it in 06

Thanks for the information. The 2006 STI did not have the air pump, but the 2004-2006 engines appear identical otherwise, unless anyone has information to the contrary.

If that's true, then it really comes down to the harness and it would seem the 2004 has the easiest harness to work with.

I know this is an old trend but I have been looking for some info because I'm doing an engine swap on an 2006 STI but the motor we purchased was from an 2005 and was told everything was the same but now it won't start, so now I'm thinking the harness is differn't so that's why it won't start so should I change it or look for another problem?

you're trying to start it with the 2006 ECU or with the 2005 ECU?
