Look to her diet as well for possible causes. It could be food allergy or even the types of food she eats. Foods that are rich in omega3 fatty acids are GOOD for your skin, so she should consider eating fish, olives, flaxseed, etc.
Anyway, diet can be a key problem with acne. Something to consider. |

neutrogena acne wash is salacylic acid, mild, to peel the skin and dry it.
Culprits of acne: 1) oil 2) debris blocking the pores 3) bacteria feeding on the oil Block two of the three, no acne. Most products work by drying the skin and clearing away the debris. Antibiotics work by killing bacteria but not the oil. So most derms do a combo treatment. Antibiotics are essential for acne that is not mild in nature. |

My dermatologist tells me that diet has nothing to do with acne. Though I still have acne so maybe he's wrong.
I've also tried "everything" |

Ok let me tell you about this. im somewhat of a expert....
for the past few years ive had to struggle with a pretty bad case of acne. ive tried all the over the counter neutrogena acne face washes, and clean & clear stuff, but it didnt help at all. so eventually i went to a dermatologist. we tried simple cremes at first. starting with a low based retin-a, moving to a stronger formula, then finally the highest strength creme. that didnt work, so we tried a new creme that had just hit the market, differin gel. In the beginning it helped, but eventually it started to lose its effects. So then we combined it with a brevoxyl formula and a benzoyl peroxide wash....nothing. So then i started on a interal anitbiotic. The only one that i can remember was tetracycline, which actually worked, but didnt do the complete job. All these cremes and pills didnt work so i had go medival on acne's ass. I took the plunge and started on Accutane. (this is probably teh pill yrou sister was tellign you about ) Accutane is like the god of acne medicines. It's super strong and super espensive, but really worth it. It involved a monthly trip to get blood withdraw, along with monthly visits to the dermatologist. It has side-effects, like all drugs do. You can loss your hair, get rashes, nose bleeds, blurred visions, dehydration, depression (they are still doing studying onthat side-effect)..etc etc...b/c its basically drying out your skin and killign the bacteria that causes acne. I personally had mild hair loss, and rashes, and had a couple of nose bleeds. i know it sound horrible, but if yoru sisters acne is that bad, you mite want to work your way up to it. 95% of the time paitents who go onto Accutane never suffer acne again. Unfortuantley im one of the 5% who gets re-occuring acne. So now im gonna go back onto a lower dose of Accutane. I know this sounds horrible, but trust me it was well worth it. Ive already spent too much money on over the counter washes, and yes i bought Proactive too (bullllll-crap). But hey this is the price you pay. tell her to also use a oil-free mosturizer, a oil control wash, not to touch her face, and to only wash her face twice a day. Also a nitely swipe of toner to remove all the dirt from the day helps alot. i know i wrote a novella, but hey, like i said im some wat of a expert on it =P::edit:: i agree, diet has NOTHING to do with it all...and yes your sister CANNOT get pregnant on this ish, it'll have some ill effects ![]() Last edited by Bunny; 09-17-2002 at 12:06 AM. |

Get the dryest, aloe-free soap you can find. wash a couple times a day. IT dries your fasce out, but keeps the acne way down. I have also heard (enter wives tale) that egg whiters on your face helps. It is supposted to harden and suck the moisture formt eh face. aprrently it's supposed to be some kind of 'beauty tip'.
Friend of mine took the pill. Didn't seem to affect him that I could tell...of course it did not seem to work that great either though. You have to use the soap religously. |

See a dermatologist and see if he/she can get her on Accutane. Earlier the better since her face can scar.
I'm on the last of my 5 month course. Works real well on preventing the start of acne. |

Chances are, if it's "bad enough" nothing over the counter will help. I had it BAD, and the only thing that worked for me was Acutane -- it's a prescription and it's serious stuff -- you need to be on it for 1 year, 1 pill, twice daily, and have blood tests every 3 months or so, and she ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY CAN'T GET PREGNANT WHILE TAKING IT!!
A combination of that, plus some Retin A (facial cream/gel -- again, serious stuff, NOT over the counter) she'll be gorgeous within a matter of months. I have been acne free for virtually 3 years. It's good stuff, but you need to go to a dermatologist -- the regular stuff on the market sounds like it isn't good enough. |

LOL!!!!!!! I just saw your post about the "Depressed or suicidal" -- that's the pill that supposedly caused that 15 year old kid to fly and crash a Cessna into a building!!!!!
There is a possible side effect, but there is not much truth to it. Chances are, that kid was WAY messed up that Acutane had nothing to do with it. I have spoken to MANY people who have taken it and nobody I have spoken to have ever had any side effects, other than a reddish face at first (you have to stay out of sun cause your skin is really sensitive when you're on it) Bottom line, that suicide=acutane thing is a bunch of bs |

I'm 15 right now and i've been struggling with acne since 8th grade. I've tried numerous face washes and creams. Right now, what seems to work the best for me is Johnsons and Johnsons clean and clear face wash and rubbing alchohol. Use the rubbing alchohol after she washes her face, thats what worked for me.

Hey, I agree with CirrusWRX. I was on Accutane for 5 months (that is how long it lasts) and I haven't have problems since. The pills are expensive, and you have to take them daily, between 1-4 depending on severity. Accutane has been found to cause liver problems in a few case studies, so blood and urine tests have to done on a monthly basis. Overall it was BY FAR the most impressive medication out there. The way it works is sorta simple...
They have data that most ance is caused by hyperactive moisture glands inside the subdermal layer under your skin. Since they are hyperactive, they tend to put out more oils then your pores can normally shed. Acutane has been found to "clamp" down on these glands and reduce their output. That is why people get rashes, skin peeling, and hair loss problems. Over the span of 5 months, those glands get use to the reduced output and are in essence "retrained". That allows the person to stop using acutane and not have to worry about breakouts. Occasionally people will have a flareup, but those can normally be controlled with OTC meds or a small dosage of Retin A. Some people will get acne again over the next 2-3 years. Those people have to go back on acutane in attempt to retrain those glands again. That usually doesn't happen though. One thing though, just so you know. Most sever acne is NOT controlled by food, cleanliness, or OTC meds. It is caused almost 100% of the time by heredity, and unfortunatly, you can't control that... Thomas |

IMHO accutane is the only thing that works. I had severe acne from age 12 to 17, and nothing would work on it. I bit the bullet and took accutane, the 5 months that i took it were not fun, but it sure did work.
I only had two of the side affects but they sucks, my lips would crack to the point of bleeding (i live in miami so my lips had never chapped b4), and i had some depression. For most of my treatment i was on one pill a day and i was a pretty angry person, but then the doctor put me on two pills and i wanted to kill the world, so they put me back down to one,and it wasnt so bad anymore. After the treatment was done, my skin cleared up completely, my lips moistened again, and my depression completely disappeared. Now its been two year since the treatment and honestly, I rarely take care of my skin, yet i've only had like a total of ten pimples since i finished my treatment. I'm a satisfied accutane customer, plus it was on my insuranse so i paid like a total of about 100 bucks for my treatment. |

Man, I didn't realize this many people had bad acne. I have a twin sister who's had bad acne since we were 13. We're 22 now. I had acne for a little over a year in junior high and was done with it. Guess I'm lucky. I have a tiny break out on my upper lip once in a blue moon from shaving but that's about it.
I feel really bad for her. Some days it gets really bad and red that she won't leave the house. Make sure the lotions, make-up, or other face products she uses say non-comodogenic (means it won't clog pores). You may want to check the water in your house. I know some people have allergic reactions to the chlorine and other contaminants in tap water. I work with a company that sells water filters (drinking-water filters; one product is a shower filter). It filters out chlorine and a bunch of other contaminants. We have documentation that shows some kids whose eczema (sp?) cleared up after they started using a shower filter. (Not making medical claims here). Weird and scary test: go buy a pool/spa tester kit with Orthotolodine (it checks chlorine level). Put a few drops in a glass of your household tap water. Usually turns yellow, signalling chlorine. The government puts a "legal" amount of chlorine in our water to kill living organisms. Scary to think how many times that water you're drinking or showering in has been recycled through other people. I think it's fine but I'd rather not drink or shower in it. Your body absorbs more chlorine in a 10 minutes hot shower than drinking a glass of tap water. It's cuz your pores are open in a hot shower. I see chlorine as the plastic when you buy bread. It protects the bread but I don't eat it. Chlorine protects water but I'd rather filter it out before drinking it. Sorry for the long post. Only meant to talk about my sister and got rolling. ![]() |

Ah acne, my constant companion since the age of 13. First of all, over the counter pimple creams will kinda keep your acne in check, but do nothing to prevent it or treat it. Clearasil and stuff like that is for flawless faced girls who freak out when they get a tiny pimple on their forehead. It doesn't do much for greasy pizza faced teenagers though.
Get your sister to a dermatologist. They can give you all kinds of stuff that actually works (to a degree). I tried Clindamycin gel and pads, but to no avail. Tried Differin gel, but that didn't do a whole lot. My face was still pretty oily after using both of those. I went back to Clearasil for a while before my allergist called his dermatologist friend to ask what he could prescribe for me. I'm on Benzaclin now, which is a drying agent/topical antibiotic, which seems to be working pretty well. Used twice a day, my face seems mostly clear, but gets pretty dry and sensitive after a few days use. I now use it once a day usually. I wash my face with Clearasil face wash and use astrigent on my face, neck and back twice a day. The astrigent seems to help a lot in drying out the oil and killing bacteria. Also, spending time in the sun will dry out your skin, and I think the UV rays kill the bacteria. My skin always looks and feels much smoother after a day at the beach. In theory it should go away on its own as you get older. I'm 22 and still as greasy as a 14 year old. Uncool. |

Accutane is some cool stuff. WOrks really well. Unfortunately, I didn't get on it soon enough and I have the scarred back to prove it. But man, once I started it cleared up in like 3 months.

I have pretty oily skin on my face and had problems in high school. I tried everything even tetracycline (sp?), that stuff just dries you out so bad, made my lips all dried and crackly. anyway as I got older I found that the best thing was Clinque face soap. Find a soap that she likes that is made specifically for the face. and have her wash her face. it sucks, I would imagine worse for a girl because of makeup. I still wash my face in the shower in the morning, if I can during the day (if not with soap then at least water) and at night before going to bed. I just hope that my daughter got my wife's skin, cause having oily skin is not fun.
good luck to her. diet may have somehting to do with it. but keep your face clean and it's just a crap time because of hormones. |
