Default Is it an EJ253 or EJ251?

Ok so I picked up a block that needs a rebuild for cheap last night. The seller had thought it was an EJ253 but wasn't 100% positive. I just want to figure it out so I can order up parts.

Numbers on block

Z25
903

I'm not sure what those numbers mean or if they would be useful for identification. Do you have just the short block?

I'm pretty sure the block on the EJ251 and EJ253 are identical.

Yeah just the short block. It's getting rebuilt and my EJ25D heads mated to it to drop in my 98 legacy.

I believe the biggest difference is the oil pan and WP. due to some internal changes but overall identical.

I did more research and determined it is an EJ253 due to the shape of the pistons. I guess the 251 pistons are a flat top, but the ones in my 253 have a dome shape protruding off of them. Now the question is do I rebuild it, or the 25D to drop in the Legacy. I'm just rebuilding it so I can sell the car.
