through the bluetooth dongle, he has a wiring harness to go from his car audio wires to the bluetooth harness, then he connects his N7 to the bluetooth box.

Hey,

This is fab! I'm looking at this and planning on doing the same thing to my car. I'm just wondering if you can still use the parrot for a normal car kit while listening to music - i.e. If you get in the car with your iphone, then start driving, listening to music or having the sat nav on etc.... 10 mins in to journey your cell rings, can you answer with the parrot and it shuts off the nexus?

Also, how much clearance was there between the power connection and the edge of the double din plastics? I'm installing to a different car in the UK so just wondering if yours was a standard double din adapter of if it was a custom job?

I'm now pricing and ordering the tablet and parts to begin my install

Thanks for the ideas!

the parrot can connect to multiple devices although I find that I have to manually connect my iPhone. So the integration is not seamless with multiple bluetooth devices but it does work.

(Crutchfield is telling me I need a wiring harness then a special bluetooth harness that connects to the bluetooth receiver)
Have you had a problem with the MKi9 disconnecting on you?

I see you're in SoCal and so am I so how much did the acrylic cost? and what dimensions did you use for the acrylic?

You need a harness, it is the same as the Nissan one. I got mine from quick connect products.

http://www.quickconnectproducts.com/

MKi stays connected, use latest firmware from parrot.

I got the acrylic from Plastic Depot in torrance I think it was less than $20.

1/4" Acrylic Sheet Clear

4 x 7 (1)
6.5 x 5.5 (2)
4 x 5.5 (2)

I've considered the dock but there really isn't enough clearance for the extra bulk without heavy mods. That's something I didn't want to do, would love to see what you come up with, removability would be nice if we can fid a way for it to not be "hobby project" looking.

Great job. Clean install.

If the SWC are no longer functioning. You should swap it out with the blank fom a base model. My biggest pet peeve is having a button or switch that does not work.

Here is how it came out, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

My Parts List:

Subaru of America Double DIN AV Panel (ia Performance)
Google Nexus 7 (Staples)
Parrot MKi 9100 (Amazon.com)
Rocketfish Dual USB Vehicle Charger (Best Buy)
Tech Armor Anti-Glare & Anti-Fingerprint (Matte) Screen Protector (Amazon.com)
eBay snap on back cover for mounting N7 (from seller "toolmld")
Custom built acrylic double DIN sized "box" as a support
Metra 95-8902 Double DIN Installation Kit cannibalized for brackets (Amazon.com)
Metra 70-7552 Radio Wiring Harness for power tap (Amazon.com)
Enercell 12VDC Vehicle Power Accessory Outlet (Radio Shack)
StarTech.com Micro USB Cable - A to Right Angle Micro B (Amazon.com)

I already had a Parrot MKi9100 in the car and mostly used my phone to play music and do navigation so I rarely used my actual head unit. A android tablet would just continue to use the same bluetooth connection for audio output so I only had to worry about mounting and powering it. The Parrot would take care of driving the speakers and providing speakerphone services.

I ripped the head unit out and tried out the tablet in the car for a few weeks.

Just Testing

Once I got all the software working and I was happy with how the overall integration felt I started to design the mounting method.

I knew I wanted to use a stock bezel and saw pics of the N7 fitting neatly behind a double din opening but didn't know if the width of the tablet would fit under the curves of the subaru bezel. After I saw the fitment in zedix's thread it gave me the confidence to go for it.

Test fitting.

Trimming bottom tabs, I also had to trim off the top center tab.
Awesome work. How much the complete tablet installation costs you? I am thinking installing same device in my car.

I'm having trouble understanding what exactly the parrot unit is doing. Does this handle both driving the speakers and as a hands free device? And how is it setup?

I really want to use a nexus 7 as a head unit but the only thing I have not been able to figure out is how to have hands free calling work somewhat seamlessly.

If you could help me out with this that would be great.

I really want to do this, but i don't want the screen for the parrot bluetooth. Is there an app that controls the parrot?

Your one pic answers my question somewhat.
But, how well does the GPS work with the unit in-dash ?
I would not have thought the antenna sensitive enough.
For this to work for me, the GPS has to be practically 100%.
Thanks.

It is mounted above, in the stock location for iPod Adapter / Sat Radio Modules. It is attached to the factory bar, my car had the bar installed because I had the iPod adapter, I don't know if the bar is installed if you did not have iPod or SAT options from the factory.

You can see it (blue box) in this pic.

The parrot is the amp for the tablet, audio is sent to it via bluetooth from the nexus 7. My iPhone also connects to it for handsfree speakerphone. The parrot can handle both devices at the same time but to be honest the transitions are not as smooth as I would like, however parrot has improved this with each firmware update. So, does it work? yes. Is it seamless? Not exactly.

Have you found any comparable devices like the parrot that can do a better job?

Here's my version. It's pretty awesome having a tablet in the car lol. I have obd gauges, Internet tethered from my phone, navigation, equalizer in the glove box, full integration from my phone with tablet talk, and my factory radio is installed behind it so I can use the factory bluetooth

Very nice work!

I love the concept, was wondering you could tie it into aftermarket AMP/SUB.

Is the Nexxus 7 the same size as a double DIN or is it slightly bigger?

Yeah that's how mine is. I have an 1/8 inch to rca cable running to the equalizer as the main input and the outputs from the equalizer run to my amp for the speakers and sub. The nexus 7 is a little bigger in both directions. I saw that the galaxy tablet has similar dimensions
