Do you have connection with your steering wheel?

Is anybody else having battery problems? My nexus charges at full capacity when the car is on, but apparently that's still not enough. It loses more battery overnight than it gains while driving. So every once in a while I'll have to bring it inside to charge. I've tried different battery saver apps that help, but not enough. Any solutions?

First or second gen N7?

What battery apps? How far did they go with the conservation...bluetooth, wifi, CPU?

Rooted--Kernel?

I haven't taken the time to figure out how to get Secure Settings plugin to work for screen on/off, so I have timeout set to min/max for off/on respectively.

ON--"Any Power USB"

OFF - "NO POWER"

I have a kernel that supports Fast Charge and I never have any issues with maintaining power....2013 N7, however

I'll try those settings out. It's a 1st Gen, rooted. I haven't done much research yet since I've been so busy with work and school. I forgot the battery apps names but they turn of bluetooth, wifi, and gps as far as I know. And my rom says it supports fast charging but I don't know if it does or not, because a couple other features it's supposed to have don't work right

I should also point out that I have:

-Startup manager - all apps that don't need to start with boot are shut off
-STRIPPED EVERYTHING out of the ROM--only system/user apps that are ABSOLUTELY necessary

Get a better charger? If i leave mine on overnight and come out to it in the morning its at 80% or so from updating all my playlists that i change and updating the apps. Its on a dedicated 3amp duracell charger meant for ipads. Normally shoots back up to full by my 25 min drive to work.

I have a 3amp charger. I'm thinking there might be something wrong with the rom I'm running

Make sure there aren't any wakelocks keeping your CPU hot overnight. I use the app "Wakelock Detector" on my Nexus 4. Go into the settings and turn on 'advanced mode' and 'statistics since unplug', then turn your car off and let the N7 go to sleep for a while. Wake it up while it's still "unplugged" (not charging) and open wakelock detector, put it in kernel mode (little drop-down at the top). It should say "awake (some percentage less than 100%)". If the bar isn't mostly green (deep sleep) you have a problem.

Awesome thanks I'll give that a try. This morning I ran into another problem. I noticed the screen was starting to come unglued due to the heat and tried pushing it back down.. And the screen cracked

I just got mine in tonight and realized two things off the bat, one of which is discussed already:

-turning the screen on when I don't have access to the power button.
-charging, I'm using the USB from the MKi9100, but I doubt that'll actually keep it charged.

I'm sure there will be times when I don't want the screen on all the time. Turning it off is no big deal, but turning it back on without access to the power button is proving to be difficult. How have other people solved this issue?

Power wise, if my MKi9100 doesn't keep it charged, I'll probably end up hard wiring a USB plug into the system, naturally using a switched source. I had done this before in a 2006 BMW 330i I owned before; I simply tapped into the local cigarette lighter wiring and ran my own plug behind the dash and plugged the charger into that. Luckily in our Imprezas the lighter plug is switched, so as long as it provides enough juice, this might be a viable way to do it. Maybe it's old news and others have tried this, but I'll probably go this way unless I see that it's a bad idea.

I have a kernel that has "Sweep2Wake." Basically, with the screen off, you swipe the screen where the navigation buttons would be and it wakes up. It also has the option to "double tap" the screen to wake it up.

The development community for Android is awesome

Cool, I'll have to check it out. So far the N7 has resisted rooting and such, but that may not be possible much longer.

I thought of a very (VERY) low tech way of doing this:
The screen comes on naturally when it's plugged into a power source, simply running a switch in line with the power (from the cigarette lighter or such) would work. Flip the switch to off to cut power to the device, then flip it on to reconnect power and thus turning the screen on. Low tech, a bit silly, inelegant, but functional.

I finally got my power situation fixed. I'm running timur's usb rom which says it gives you screen on and off with power on and off. But it wasn't working for me for the longest time. I realized you have to turn on fixed installation mode AND use an otg cable. Even if you don't plan on plugging in usb drives, you still have to use the otg. Now it works perfect every time. And you can add a custom boot down image. It also puts the tablet in deep sleep mode and my battery stays fully charged. The only thing is I don't think you can use fixed installation mode and read from a USB drive at the same time with a split otg/power cable

Anyone have any tips on installing timurs rom? I've got CyanogenMod installed but I can't seem to figure out the kernel or find and good detailed instructions. The first attempt bricked my tablet and it wouldn't open past the google screen. I used the android toolkit to re flash to factory settings.

This is great. Was planning a way to do this in my FXT, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to come on and shut off with the vehicle power. Now you've given me the solution. Tasker! So excited.

Hi

Really impressed with this build and this was the motivation for me to try my own. I'm going with a similar style as yours and have ordered all the parts apart from the clear perspex box.

Is there any reason why you didn't go with a double din cage enclosure? e.g
Celsus ACG5041 Radio Cage - Double DIN 103mm with Fitting Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Car & MotorbikeCelsus ACG5041 Radio Cage - Double DIN 103mm with Fitting Kit: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

My concern with the perspex box is how to get the brackets in the right place to ensure the tablet sits flush with the fascia trim.

I played with the idea in my head putting my N7 in my car also. I've worked it out and I think its very doable with my setup!

All the recommended settings and apps solved most of my second thoughts except one: How do you adjust the volume without going back to the a home screen widget. IE: If im in an app like spotify or nav, I have to go back to the home screen each time I want to adjust the volume?

Is there a permanent fixture via an app or rom? just curious. thanks

My solutions:
You can maintain steering wheel controls with the Joycon EXR unit.
You can adjust the volume through the status bar (GravityBox might be required for this tile addition, not sure.).
Any USB/BT/Wifi keyboard/input with volume/programmable controls.

Beauty of Android is there are apps/widgets/solutions for everything. GMD Gesture Control will allow you to setup a gesture to change volume--whatever path, location, and touch points you decide.

You're right, Android allows for lots of customization. Thanks for the app suggestion.
Also found a few that add volume up/down to the nav bar which would be perfect.

Now I'm not sure which route is the best to install.
1. keep my sony bluetooth single din and move it to fit the nexus in front of it with double din dash kit (nexus connected via aux to sony)
-pros: easiest and least time consuming
-con: If I ever need to disconnect the battery I will lose my input, bluetooth settings and will need to pull everything to set them back

2. Route my sony to the glove. More work involved but will have access to the head unit if needed

3. Buy an equalizer and put it in the glove.

Note: I have 2 amps and a sub.
