Maserati and Subaru: A Tale of Two Projects
Hey Everyone,
Please vote! It's been a while since I've started a thread. I find myself with a couple projects and wanted to get some feedback first on the Subaru. Project One: The Subaru is a 1998 Outback Sport with RS front end and a WRX swap. The swap was professionally done so that is pretty much good but it needs some little fixing and tweaking in other areas. The body in general is in very good condition for a 98, zero rust on the quarter panels and very little rust on the door. However, the paint is faded and two tone and the fenders and bumper are unpainted so I think it would be a great opportunity to paint the car. This is where I need your input. I have gotten some feedback on color from a few people but wanted the broader forum opinion. Basically, if you were planning to buy a GF8 with a swap, what color would you want it to be? It is black with silver, so black would obviously be the easiest in terms of not having to paint the jambs and rear hatch opening. However, I am going to get some quotes on cost to do the jambs and rear as well because if I have to paint it anyways it could be cool. I likely will not do the engine bay and underside of hood if that matters(well maybe hood but not engine bay for sure). Please vote on the poll for what color I should paint the car. Ideally I will then get the car painted in the next couple weeks. I may try and do some youtube videos of the progress since it may be easier so stay tuned. If I don't list a specific type of color, if you vote and have one in mind please tell me what paint color/code you think. Project Two: The Maserati is a 2005 Coupe, Cambiocorsa with the F1 transmission. It needs a new engine. I bought the car assuming it would need a new engine but was hoping it did not. I will be working on that somewhat in parallel and hopefully can make progress on that too. it needs some interior refreshing, re-attach some of the headliner, change out the headunit, part of the dash/center console. And most of all, get the engine swapped. I have a Max Jax lift sitting in my garage that I have yet to install so I hope I can get that in before doing the Maserati becuase the engine will need to be removed from the bottom. Anyways, hopefully you can give some input on the subaru paint and you find it educational/entertaining as well. For good measure, all three cars hanging out together because I'm a loser like that. Thanks! Ben

I've always been partial to white GF/GC Subarus myself, so that's where my vote's at. Interested to see progress on both! Best of luck

Thanks Art! Looks like so far your vote is winning, I do think white GC's look sweet. From a small independent poll, apparently women like a "dark blue" and "not a lame blue". when given choice it was usually blue ridge pearl or WRB.
Hopefully get some more input here. I called a couple places today. I also called a local school to see if they wanted to learn auto body on the car and paint it for free but I doubt they will. Ben |

I'd say red for the gf, but your maserati is already red so my vote is satin white pearl.

Awesome, thanks! Glad to see more votes coming in, this is helpful!
Nothing very exciting happening lately. Need to go officially put the car in my name today and put some insurance on it, the previous owner got the lien release on Tuesday and have been busy this week. Got a bluetooth speaker just for the purpose of being able to work in the garage with some tunes and get some things done! Ben |

Got to start doing some stuff on the GF8 this weekend. Fairly minor beginnings but good to make some progress.
The car has a sound system(and a decent on at that) but I am over that phase and didn't want a sub box and amp in the back of the wagon effectively making it useless as a wagon...So I pulled those out. need to still pull the door speakers and replace them. The rear seat does not fold, the release tabs do nothing when you pull up on them. I am trying to figure out how to release them manually another way but was unsuccessful so far(didn't want to break anything). If anyone has any suggestions feel free to let me know! I am probably pissing off my townhouse neighbors hanging out of my garage but oh well, gotta do work! Pulled the grill(held in by zip ties) and the hood scoop and vents. I will likely pull the front lip/fog covers and side skirts as well for when it is painted to make it easier and hopefully cost less since I did half the work removing it. I actually already ordered and recieved clear corners and side markers, I think it just looks way cleaner. I was unaware some people consider the amber ones "JDM" now. There is an AEM wideband gauge I started to remove since it isn't hooked up to an 02, however it is wired up so I would just need to install a bung and sensor, so I may just do that instead. I spent 2 hours in the DMV on Saturday for the title transfer, seriously how do they suck so bad? It will be good though so I can potentially drive it on a road trip this weekend since it has A/C and my legacy does not at the moment haha. Looks like Steel Blue Mica is winning at the moment for color choice. I do personally like that color since it is cool and unique. My dilemma is that a color change would cost even more and I'm not made of money so I'll try and get a quote of the difference this week. Ben |

Man I can't believe it's been over a month since I last posted, def been busy with other things.
made some progress this weekend with more disassembly. Also got a quote from the paint shop. It was a quote from Maaco, which in all honesty I think CAN do a good job if they want, it just remains to be seen if they will... Basically I am trying to do as much disassembly as possible to get a better paint job vs. them trying to mask everything. I am going with the base/clear paint job and have decided on the Steel Blue Metallic, paint code 86F. I debated on staying just black but that is boring. The runner up in the poll was aspen white, which I do also like but wanted to do something a bit different as well. Shout out to hail2thethief for his help on the paint side of things. I swapped the other wheels out for steelies during the paint process just for safety. More trim removal, this was good for me to do/learn as I have been curious how it all goes together and part of the whole point of this project. It's crazy and great this car has no rust already on the rear fenders. wink Going to be rolling so dirty to the shop, which is really only about 3-4 miles away. The bulbs are still hooked up, but recently discovered the right turn signal doesn't work in the front but does work in the back...not sure why. Need to still remove door handles and window trim, try and do that tomorrow evening and drop the car off Tuesday morning. Was originally planning on tomorrow morning but gonna try and do a couple more things before hand. I have a dilemma on the JDM roof rails, they use a security torx bit which is fine in itself but now I'm concerned it may require headliner removal which I really don't want to do, nor do I want to pay Maaco to do it, so we'll see. Timeline is supposedly 2-3 weeks, I would prefer 2 weeks but we'll see what they say. Ben |

Dropped the wagon off at the paint shop tonight. Wasn't fully ready but they said they can just take the roof rack off and rear tail lights and last two door handles(for free supposedly). So I said "Sure!" and dropped the car off.
Supposedly will have it back around October 3rd. I had issues removing the outer door window trim at the base of the windows. Clearly I didn't know how to properly remove that because I ended up bending two of them...off to the salvage yard I guess. Realistically I made it pretty easy for them in terms of disassembly they should be able to just get to work. I'm curious what their margin is, if it's like dealers where they basically bill about 2x the likely actual time. Looking very Mad Max-ish Luckily I didn't get pulled over driving with no headlights and taped up doors and no side view mirrors. I'm going to try and get some pics of the actual body prep/paint process as well. I told them 86F for the paint code, they only had a book of recent USDM subaru colors. Does anyone know if 86F is the dupont paint code? I don't want them to pick something "close", I want it to be the actual color. I assume Dupont has a correct translation for that code if they have others but who knows? Ben |

Just a little update.
Car is now painted, should be able to pick it up finally on Monday and start re-assembly. Naturally the light above the car didn't work when I went to see it haha. But initially it did look good. I'm pumped to start putting it back together. during disassembly I did bend a few of the window trim pieces removing them so I need to find some of those... The rear spoiler had some odd reaction on it and it bubbled up when they painted it so I have to pull that off and they are going to re-paint it. We'll see how it looks in the light. Overall they ended up taking an extra week(in addition to the extra time I already gave them since I was out of time). So, that could be better but it's not my DD at all so I cared less but still a little annoying since they said I'd have it back on Friday which would have allowed me to start putting it back together this weekend. oh well Ben |
