Default Kia Unveils Gti-fighting Pro_cee'd Gt

Leftlane: http://www.leftlanenews.com/kia-pro-ceed-gt.html

Quote:
Kia has released the first official images of the 2013 pro_cee'd GT, a hot hatch aimed at the iconic Volkswagen GTI. Based on the regular pro_cee'd, the car was designed to boost Kia's image on the European market and lure younger buyers into showrooms.

The pro_cee'd GT has been given a sporty exterior treatment by Peter Schreyer, the brand's former design chief and current president. The modifications include aggressive bumpers on both ends, a race-inspired plastic mesh grille up front and aerodynamic side skirts. Four-point LED daytime running lights and unique 18-inch wheels finish off the look.

The pictures released by Kia reveal very little about the pro_cee'd GT's cockpit but the South Korean automaker promises that Recaro bucket seats, alloy pedals and a complete instrumentation are part of the deal.

Under the hood lies the same turbocharged 1.6-liter four-banger that powers the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. Linked to a six-speed manual transmission, the mill sends 201 horsepower and 195 lb-ft. of torque to the front set of wheels, enabling the GT to sprint from zero to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds.

A sport-tuned suspension setup makes the GT more responsive to drive and upgraded brakes on all four corners keep the extra ponies in check.

After greeting the show-going public at the Geneva Motor Show next March, the pro_cee'd GT will hit showrooms across Europe in the second half of 2013. It will quickly be joined by the cee'd GT, a five-door hatchback that will be nearly identical to its smaller sibling under the skin.

Whether or not a performance-oriented hatchback similar to the GT models will travel to the United States is not currently known.

7.9 sec 0-60 from 200hp? Does this thing weigh 4000lbs?

That's probably a conservative manufacturer claim. Remember.. this is the company that recently got smacked down by trying to play the advertised numbers game.

That said, I still wouldn't expect anything lower than 7s for this car. It would need a suspension to harness the power and Hyundai/Kia have consistently shown that they aren't really interested in proper suspension tuning.

Problem found..

The pro_cee'd GT has been given a sporty exterior treatment by Peter Schreyer, the brand's former design chief and current president

A designer is now leading the charge, which is probably good for sales as the cars look great, but if the suspension or torque curve of that engine is that bad... then they need help.

62 mph. There's about a 10% difference between 0-60 mph magazine times and 0-100 km/h manufacturer claims.

It does look nice though. If the claim on speed is conservative, it might be a pretty decent competitor.

It won't sell in the States. No one buys 3 door hatchbacks.

I would... If anyone built one that I liked.
Would much prefer my Impreza as a coupe than a four door.

I would normally say the same thing but I've been suprised to see tons of honda cr-z's out there. Even people going from the wrx/sti to the cr-z.

Looks great from the side profile. Kia/Hyundai have made major strides in interior/exterior design but they are still behind when it comes to chassis tuning. Most of their performance oriented cars simply don't handle as well as the competition.

As an owner of an Impreza coupe.. ..why? Are big heavy doors that make ingress-egress extremely difficult in a normal parking lot a big turn-on for you?

I do.t have any real use for the rear doors and find the two door body styles more visually appealing.
Why do COMPACT cars HAVE to be limited to miniwagons and churchmobiles?
There was/is plenty of fanfare for the RS...
Just cause yall got kids and golf clubs doesnt mean the rest of us should have to be driving four-doors.

It's going to handle like a luffa, make 124 horsepower using 100 octane, and get perhaps 19mpg going downhill with overinflated tires. KiA!

Probably can shave 0-60mph time by 5-10% by replacing those heavy 18" wheels with 16" wheels.

My brother had a pro cee'd diesel for a short time. I think it was a 1.6 turbo 6 speed manual.

I'd rather get a GTi.. Kia's interiors are always lacking.

What's interesting is this is the kind of car that if Kia got right it would really put them on the map. Halo cars are great, but a mass production enthusiast car can have all the early adopters selling it to the masses.

Hyundai did well with the Genesis.
