Question Engine model confusion -- please help with my subie ignorance

Hey all, I have a 2004 impreza wrx wagon with an engine that is shot. Getting quotes from the shops around town is sounding a bit more and more out of reach financially to have them put in a used engine so I'm looking into doing it myself. I've run into much confusion as to what engine I'm actually looking for though. I keep seeing the ej20, ej20T(which if I understand right isnt even an official subaru designation), ej205, then there's JDM, etc etc. I'm literally looking for a 1-for-1 replacement for the engine thats in my car, can anyone school me a bit??

Thanks in advance!
-Chris

Given we're in the states, many machines or shops might have EJ20T or just EJ20 in their programs. They're all the same as there was only one 2.0 liter engine floating around at the time.

Only until very recently with the new 2012's is there another 2.0.

so let me get this straight... any model ej20 will work with any year car that had an ej20 in it factory? I.E. a 1998 ej20 into a 2005 wrx would work because the engines are exactly the same?

There wasn't a 98 EJ20 in the US that would be JDM.

I cant hardly see how moving this thread to newbie & faq can be productive for getting a question answered about an engine.

To the OP take a look at car-part.com. You can search local junkyards for all sorts of used auto parts. As I am also new to subaru's I do not know much about the interchangeably of all wrx motors, but from past experience with swapping motors I bought a cheaper motor and it turned into a headache. Details of my experience : I had a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage and when I searched car-part I didnt like the prices however I noticed that it only listed 2001 mirage engines, so I re-searched car-part.com for a 1999 because it is the same body style and found a cheaper low mileage engine. I purchased it and found many of the sensors had
different plugs and some were differnet completely. After many forum searches, troubleshooting pins and splicing wires I got said motor running. Anything car-part.com lists for your engine when you search will be a true plug and play. Hope this helps

if you google "Subaru ej engines wiki" it will tell you what engine belongs to what year/model and it will also give you an idea on what year/model motor will fit into yours.
let me know if this helps

You have to specify "EJ205". Not just "EJ20" because there are a dozen different variations both turbocharged and naturally aspirated.

You need a USDM ej205. You can find one from any USDM WRX from 02-05.
