Did you mean maybe ringland failure? Tell your buddy to get a compression test done and if it is under warranty just take it to Subaru. Turbo shouldnt be going out at 15k miles a little early for that as long as maint was kept up.

Your buddy should figure out what is wrong with the car before he thinks of throwing an upgraded turbo in there. Have him pull off the oil fill cap and let it idle. Look for smoke.

Also the VF52 is a good turbo..little too small at my altitude but its a great street turbo especially on E85. If I was near sea level I wouldn't upgrade. Was your friend on the stock tune and stock parts?

My first stop would have been the dealer. I am assuming from your post, it's stock.

I would have told this "buddy" to log on and make this thread instead of playing "telephone" with the info.

Well, you could refill the turbo by putting oil in the inlet and letting it idle for a few minutes. Of course this will need to be repeated about once a month.

I think your buddy should have bought a Camcord, as the turbo piston rings are much more reliable in that car. Seriously though, maybe he needs a louder BOV? I am here all week folks. Please tip the waitstaff!
