Default Help me fit in - NASIOC culture shock

So I've been here a couple weeks now and man this place feels hostile!

I have never see a forum where it's pitchforks and torches when someone asks as question. I mean, sure, intake and exhaust threads can get old but even one off questions seem to have more members tearing each other a new one than actually discussing the topic.

Isn't this a place for knowledge and sharing? I mean if the stickies alerted truly that great and comprehensive then why not lock this place down and end all posting?

Figured I would vent a bit here in my home chapter. Too frightened to ask what the heck is up in the main forum.

I'm trying here!!

Search is your savior, as well as proper spelling. Stay out of OT and general until you grow a thick skin. Welcome and enjoy the good times.

I find nasioc a microcosm for the real world.

There are nice, decent, and great people and at the same time complete a$$ holes, opinionated jerks, and know it alls.

You can't let the second group of people deter you from seeking help and knowledge from the first. At the same time you can't go down town with you wallet and cell phone in your hand asking directions from shady characters.

You'll find a lot of help on these chapter forums, sometimes even people who will meet up and lend a helping hand like I did this past Sunday.

I always google search whatever issue I have followed by the word nasioc and 9/10 I find what I need. Anything else post up right where you did and you'll find help... And one or two insults.

Agreed.A lot of the majority of this forum is younger people, which some think they're the best thing out there. Some tend to "gang" up on some members. If you need help or have any questions about anything, please feel free to pm me anytime.

Welcome!

The MAIC chapter is pretty calm and collective from what I've seen. I've only made it to one meet, but everyone was very polite and friendly!

Search before you ask. Most questions have been answered.

It's not that bad, been on other forums before where it was much worse, but you will learn to have a thick skin. Try and search for the answer first before posting you will have better results in the end. Welcome!

Two things that have already been said. Stay out of OT and become active in your local forum. It's normally safe to ask questions here with out any problems.

I've met some pretty nice people so far, and a bunch who gave genuine help.
:-)

But then, there's always a couple...

First thing I learned here is research, then I ask if all else fails.

MAIC is pretty nice, but none of the forums handle general questions very well.

If you chose to do your own thing and not take any of the community approved modding advice, it's best not to post it.

Basics:
Don't slam your car, subies are at a bump travel and camber disadvantage. If you post slammed pics, you will hear about it, unless you post it in one of the stantz threads, or claim it's a show car.

No capacitors in your car audio, upgrade alternator/battery/wiring (big3)

No hellaflush or poke (nor tire stretching)

No roll cages unless you are actually tracking the car and towing it on a trailer.

No limo tint in NoVA

Don't ever post accident pics involving your own car unless someone has clearly hit you and you had 100% nothing to do with it

No car insurance or carfax requests

Spottings go in the spotting thread

No cross-posting, or double-posting threads

Etc...

Also, If you try to take my benchracing trophy, I'll fight you.

Your best bet is to become active in your local chapter and meets as stated above. This forum is full of keyboard tough guys but 100% of the people at the small and large meets I have been to have been informative, helpful, and friendly. I only stay active on this website because I have met an awesome active group of people that regularly get together for lunch, gun range, go-carts, install days, whatever you can think of in my area. The classifieds are also very good and so are the vendors.

Its always in your best interest to research on your own than ask general question on this forum because you will run into the people that spam post "ask your tuner" or "did you even search bro?"

I do find that some people on here can be ignorant and pretty disrespectful at times, but like others have said, you just need to have a thick skin when it comes to NASIOC and some other forums. Unfortunately a lot of people are afraid to ask questions, even in the newbie threads, when this is a forum for asking those questions yet people get flamed all the time. I do understand both sides of it though, it does get old seeing the same exhaust and BOV questions over and over, and people not searching first, but that happens and I don't see the reason for getting all worked up over it. Normally when someone gets super flamed though is when they get told how it is, and they get butt-hurt about hearing the truth. That just starts the snowball effect of everyone teaming up on that one person. Honestly though, some of those people deserve it. Plain and simple, if you ask for advice, be prepared to get good AND bad advice, and totally useless nonsense. If you browse enough you'll find who to avoid and who will actually be helpful to you.

Oh, and yeah stay out of OT if you're worried. That's kind of like seeing a giant red button that has a sign that says "Do not push", you're probably gonna push it anyways lol.

Anyways, don't let it get you down, try not to be too sensitive on here and always remember that it's just the internet. Some people get off on being asshats on here because they need some way to vent their real lives, it happens. There's a lot of useful information on here and a lot of people willing to help, just gotta find it. Oh and welcome!

To add to the below:

-- No posts about street racing or breaking traffic laws. Very few have any tolerance for that.

Find one of the local lunch threads or get togethers. Most people seem to be more accepting/friendly to Subie owners they have met in person.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi J_Jay. Welcome.

Feel free to come by the Mach V shop in Sterling. (That's my business.) We're friendly people, and even if you ask the most basic of questions, we promise not to slap you and yell "Search, noob!"

This forum does get a little easier to take once you've been here a bit and read over all the FAQs and stuff. But yeah, it's kind of rough on newcomers.

Hey thanks a bunch, Dan.

I have heard good things about your shop in the searches I have performed here as well as your site in general.

I definitely plan to get in touch when I start adding some suspension and exhaust bits.

Dan and the guys at Mach V are great! I agree with the earlier statement that meets and open houses are the best places to get a feel for the "Subaru Community". The open houses at Mach V have pretty cemented my love for how nice and welcoming Subaru people are. Just remember to keep a thick skin on the forums and try to get out and go to some events and meet some people.

Any open houses coming up? This would be a good excuse for me to get out that way.

NASIOC isn't a bad place. But when 2/3's of your posts are negative, you're going to get thoughts of you being a negative person. If you advise people to goto other sites along with that, you'll catch crap. It's really pretty simple. Read the link on "Top 7 1/2 tips to get along." It will help you quite a bit.

I will say, if you get completely emo, and think everyone is out to get you, you won't have a good time on the site. We do have a lot of knee jerk reactions, and "go search noob" people. But this is because 95% of what is being asked in General has been covered. The technical sections are LOADED with information. Just remember, NASIOC has been around for over 13 years. (We're older then your dog) So some of the info might be buried. And while it's still there, it will take some searching to get to it.
