Question Winter rims... what size? group buy? (Ottawa)

Hey guys,

what size of winter rims do you recommend for a 2002 RS? 15" forester steelies? (it's a silver RS, so will it look too silverish with those steelies?). What's the size of these steelies? (195/60? ...)

Is there a group buy of steelies planned in Ottawa? (I'm already part of the tire group buy)

Thanks!

A bunch of us got Forester 15" take-offs from Lachute last year. I
wouldn't worry to much about the silver, besides they are easy
to paint any colour you want before mounting the tires. I think
they were $60 or $65 each rim.

Got mine from Lachute too.

I'll check with the GB guy at Pneus Lavoie if he can get steelies and fire and email to Julien a Lachute.

Thanks,

Matt

Will any 15" steelies fit on a 2002 RS?? Or does it have the same problem as the WRX (calipers) meaning that I have to go with 16" steelies??

I don't know if the 15" is the same issue as the WRX..... How much space is there by the caliper and the inner rim? On the WRX, there basicly no room....

Here's a pic from my 99RS.... I cant remember if it was the rear wheel.... but try to see how much space....

I could bring one of my winter rims at the next meeting and we could install it (see if it would clear)....

I got prices for winter rims in 15" and 16" for the NCSC group buy, email me at mturmel2@hotmail.com.

The prices are also posted on the NCSC board.

Thanks,

Matt

I just got my 2003 WRX yesterday. I am interested in purchasing winter tires/steelies.

I was going to just get them from Ogilvie Motors, but I would appreciate any info about group purchases.

Thanks,

Enzo

Ok, according to the Brakes and tire forum, 15" steelies are ok for the RS. That's what I'll get... unless there's a reason to go for 16" ??

Yeah, go to 16", so you can pay more for your winter tires!

Seriously, the biggest reason is bigger brake clearance. But again, it's 45$ a wheel...

Handling wise, does it make a big difference since it's winter tires anyways? (ie: no fancy driving on dry pavement because you leave rubber everywhere)

The RS has the same front brakes as the TS so caliper clearance shouldn't be a problem.

Now if only I could decide between the G02 and the Nokians.. (currently looking at reviews..). You had the G02 right? Were you really satisfied with them? (grip in Ottawa, thread life, ..)

mart,
I've had the toyo Garit for 2 seasons, their high performance model. I used them on my 98 talon and now on the rex, they're great for 95% of the driving, even did winter solo with them, they were average on bare ice, but again, studs are hard to beat there.

Handling? You want grip and traction in the winter, no need to take curves at high speed! Like you said, you'll rip the ultra soft sidewalls of the winter tires.

If budget is not so important, get the Nokians, the Qs should do very well, the 1s are studdable. They also last pretty long according to some. I'll try them next winter when the toyos die.
