Have a Nice Day? Rear main seal gone - 650kms? Help!

HELP! I was leaking oil on my brand new '02 2.5 TS and took it into service. They said that the rear main seal needed to be replaced. How concerned should I be? Will this cause long term reliability problems?

Thanks in advance

Jason

I would be really concerned. Any leak would can cause oil leak which "may" lead to an engine failure.

You shouldn't have a single leak anyway. Get it replaced for free!

I meant that they are replacing it.
I was wondering if I should be concerned about having a lemon. Or if the repair of this part may mean more trouble down the road.

I don't think so. I had the repaired on my old S-10. I watched them actually do it. Doesn't seem like it should be much issue if it's done right. The seal on my truck started leaking around 75,000(my brother over filled the engine oil by 1 quart once, noticed it about half way to the Outer Banks, that's why it leaks there and at the valve cover gasket). I didn't get it fixed until about 140,000. Just kept putting oil in every month, as it was a slow leak. If you didn't lose too much oil, it won't be a problem at all.

I doubt you have a lemon. You just had a defect in the seal. Replacing it should solve problems.

Thats funny that you say that. I had a 2000 RS and very often I smelled oil. I suspedted it was leaking from the rear main and drippin on the y pipe and burning. It will do that FOR SURE if its overfilled.

Cool

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it either. I discovered a gas leak around 18 months after I bought my '93 Impreza (the weld seam where the top and bottom of the tank come together was coming apart). Got it replaced under warranty and haven't had one problem since.
