Thumbs down AMR Un-Equal Length Header

I just received my AMR un-equal length header that I ordered through Import Image Racing and wanted to share my experience, to hopefully better the knowledge-base of other users when selecting parts.

Import Image Racing was initially very accommodating by allowing me to exchange another header that I had ordered a fairly considerable time ago while I was deployed to Afghanistan for the AMR header. I wanted the AMR header due to its fairly unique design and that it was manufactured here in the US by what I believed to be a reputable company. I prefer to give my money to companies that are active in R&D and contributing to the Subaru community as a whole, and not cheap Chinese knock-offs.

Upon un-boxing the header, flaws in the workmanship were immediately noticeable. The product experience mirrors that of another user's from a previous post back in 2010:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&highlight=AMR

The flaws in the fabrication range from improper mandrel bends, undercutting, lack of backpurge, ill-fitment, inclusions/pinholes in multiple welds, general welding mistakes, half-assed grinding... the works, its pretty much all there. The flange material is also composed of a ferrous steel, not 304 Stainless as advertised. The pictures in this thread should tell the story for themselves. You can see the 'sugaring' in the collector from the oxidation of the stainless steel being exposed to ambient air during welding.

Needless to say, I am not happy with the situation and quickly responded to Frankie over at Import Image Racing with pictures of some of the larger issues. Frankie then contacted AMR, and AMR gave the following response:

"There is nothing wrong with them. They are welded inside the flange as well as out.
The markings are from the mandrel bender and do not affect the performance and quality.”

Currently they are exploring 'repairing' the headers, but no resolution has been made. To make matters worse, I am going to be moving out of state shortly and need a set of (properly fabricated) headers to finish my build and get my car to my Tuner before I'm 1200 miles away.

Not sure how they can dispute the poor craftsmanship. Pictures don't lie. You know more about welding than the average customer. They probably don't get many complaints because most people don't pay that close of attention to details. Some of the welds don't look any different than a lot of the welding I see on most after market parts. What's the retail price for these?

These bad boys were $900 plus $100 for the ceramic coat through IIR.

Manimal. Thank you for the pm. of course, if you contacted me direct I would have handled it for you.

The quote from frankie, is not frankie. it was him copying/pasting AMR's response.

We sell amr, and didn't manufacture this product, but we are happy to do whatever it takes to make you happy!
The coating looks great to me, well that is because we did it.

you may want to edit your first post, as its not entirely truthful

We'll have a call tag sent and get it credited towards another purchase. We are always here to help you.

Josh

Josh,

Thank you for your quick response to the situation. And yes, I noted that it was AMR's response via Frankie repeating what they said. Perhaps my wording was a bit unclear. I didn't intend to give the appearance that it was IIR's response. I will adjust to be more concise.

It should also be noted that there were no flaws with the coating, which was a stark contrast to the header construction.

The welding is terrible. It is disappointing a manufacturer thinks those are acceptable. I'd bet 90% of the cost of that header is in the welding. At least the supplier sounds like they will be taking care of things.

Also the fact that the flanges were ferrous steel was a might bit unsettling. It gives me the impression that this is not just a coincidental case of a new fabricator botching the job, it really is calculated corner cutting. This is not a company I want to have future dealings with.

And yes, soon as Josh was made aware, he stepped in right away with a resolution.
