Default Harrys laptimer

Anybody use this for track days?

I'm wondering if the iPhone GPS is good enough to get rough data logging. I'm sure the race line won't be accurate.

I want it more for the video with position on the track overlay and rough lap times. More for reviewing after the fact than a live laptimer.

Yeah, I use it, it's freaking awesome!

I bought a bluetooth GPS unit for more accurate timing. The video overlay works great and is really really neat. I bought a RAM mount and have the iphone attached to my windshield.

You can get a wifi OBD2 sensor that will provide things like RPMs, throttle position and gear selection for overlay as well.

There are other cool things as well that I didn't know about until after I bought it. For example, when at a track day, you can see everyone else who's using the app on the track, what their times are and info about them. It's quite a well done app.

I only wish the phone had a way of hooking up external storage because it fills up quick with just one full day of track video. I wish there was a companion PC program that let you download the telemetry and video and do the overlays on the PC instead of on the phone too. Managing the videos can be a handful and slow processing the overlays, simply because its huge video and you're doing it on a phone.

I say it's totally worth the price to play around with and get some rough times using the iphone GPS, I mean its really only the cost of going out to lunch once Then if you like it, invest in a good bluetooth GPS. I hardwired my GPS right above the rear view mirror and it's always there, auto connecting to my phone whenever I get in the car.

Oh, I forgot, you can make your own tracks and log data on them as well. If you have a nice mountain run, or are interested in the telemetry of your commute to work then you can do that. There are a ton of tracks in the built in library too. Probably other stuff I'm forgetting. It's really cool

I have a qstarz bt-q818xt bluetooth gps which I have used with my old Nokia and my current Samsung android phone. The built in gps in the phone are not very good.

I still use it sometimes with ram mount and emprum ultimate gps receiver. 5hz is better than internal 1hz. Pretty accurate for what it is. Video/sound and overlay is good.

I forgot to ask... has anyone ever used it for autox/rallyx? Or are the courses usually too small for it to work? Or would it only work with an external GPS?

(I'm not really interested in getting the external GPS for my needs)

I have it and it's ok. Maybe some of the more experienced harry's users can help me. When in video mode--no lap times in car.
When using just the lap timer, lap times are too small. I want a full screen that says 1:34.2 (at Road Atlanta )
Other than those pretty big things, it works great.

I find it a decent reference app, but not overly accurate even when used with an external GPS receiver.

I've had decent accuracy within a few tenths of a second when using an external receiver.

Not to muck up the thread but I have a brand new Emprum IPhone/IPad GPS forsale, $85 shipped. It works much much better than the built in GPS.

Accurate enough for something small like a autox or rallyx course?

It's definitely accurate enough for that with an external GPS. On board GPS not so much.

I'm glad someone else posted up about this app. I just came across it while getting lost in the black hole called "YouTube". I was looking at this for AutoX purposes (primarily for the video overlay) but it seems that it's better suited for track days at Watkins Glen International or some place like that.

I use it with a KIWI ODB device to get my engine data. Just been using the internal to the phone GPS up to this point. I will probably do the 5Ghz Bluetooth External GPS at some point. Here is my fastlap from FIR east a little over a week back. I can't recommend it enough basaed on the cost alone:

Tony from TIC told me about it...I got it...and it is very close to the tracks timing and scoring. I really like it!

For anyone using this and the OBD2 adapter, is there any way to have the accessport plugged in at the same time? I'd love to be able to use this, but I also like being able to check my datalogs after each session to make sure everything is good.

Nope. The bus protocol won't allow two initiators even if you find a way to splice them physically together.

Dang, that's unfortunate.

On the bright side, I discovered a track overlay program called RaceRender. I spent some time last night making some custom gauges, and here's what I got. Next time I'll record GPS as well so I can get a track map on there.

This is the first time I was engaged watching a track video. This is so cool!
