Default BMW to use GT86/BRZ chassis for next Z4

Pretty big news here, likely of interest to many in the NASIOC community. Here's your turbo BRZ. Just cough up an extra 20 grand or so.

http://www.leftlanenews.com/next-bmw...t86-roots.html

Quote:
BMW's recently signed long-term partnership with Toyota will see the company's next-generation Z4 sports car based on the GT86. BMW inked an agreement with Toyota in January to jointly develop a new sports car platform, among other things.

According to Motor Trend, the next-generation BMW Z4 will ride on a modified version of the rear-wheel drive platform that underpins the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. The updated GT86 architecture will also underpin Toyota's upcoming Supra sports car.

Given its GT86 roots, the next Z4 should be quite the handler, but the sports car should also possess above average straight-ling speed. BMW is reportedly developing a new V6 hybrid system for the Z4 that will generate about 400 horsepower.

The Toyota Supra is tipped for a 2017 market launch, but the new BMW Z4 could launch sometime before that. The current version of the Z4 was introduced in 2009, so BMW will likely be eager to update the popular sports car well before the introduction of the Supra.

Toyota will reportedly show off a concept version of the new Supra later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show, so it remains possible that BMW could preview the next Z4 with a concept at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Subaru underpins in a BMW? Never thought I would say that.

This cannot be true. BMW does not need to borrow someone else's RWD platform. RWD platform is practically all they have. I also cannot believe the BRZ platform, which is a modified Impreza platform, would be suitable for a luxury GT like the Z4.

This must be some lame speculation by some second rate magazine.

it says its developing a hybrid v6 for the new z4... so most likely it will just be a chassis and not subaru's boxer. I bet they also replace all the components with inhouse suspension design.

Here's the Motortrend article specifically about a BMW/Toyota deal:

http://wot.motortrend.com/official-b...#axzz2KfA83pBJ

Their source is BMW itself, apparently. No April 1st joke here.

Yeah, that is very strange. I would still consider it to be nothing more than a rumor though.

I just don't see how BMW would save money by re-engineering the BRZ platform to accept an inline-6 and all of their electronics, instead of just using a modified version of their small car platform used by the 1er and the 3er.

Either the V6 was a goof, or BMW is actually going to go vee and hybrid with Toyota's help. Wonder whether ZF or Aisin trans will be used? CVT or DCT or TC? Prolly no manny tranny...

I heard they did it to block Porsche, cause Porsche was planning on doing this very thing to revive the 944. All they would have had to do was drop their own flat 6 in with popup headlights and boom.

It does seem silly, and plenty of BMW purists will vomit but I'm sure it'll save/make BMW lots of cash at every turn, as well as help Toyota build a better image.

I just hope that for every hybrid they come up with there is a non-hybrid sibling..

It's a good thing 'they' considered the advice in the suggestion box and added a bigger window in the UFO, right?
