there is a rumor about a Golf 7 R Evo. VW will show a prototype at the Bejin Motor Show in April.

It will have a few more hp than the regular Golf 7 R, but it will weigh less, they say minimum 100 kg less than the regular Golf 7 R (1476 kg).

Lighter, 370bhp VW Golf R Evo confirmed
New Golf R Evo concept car with around 370bhp set to get airing at the Beijing motor show

Volkswagen is planning to unveil an extreme version of its new fourth-generation Golf R at the Beijing motor show in April showcasing new driveline and lightweight construction technology that is being considered for inclusion on limited production road cars in the foreseeable future.

Expected to carry the name Golf R Evo, Volkswagen’s latest show car is rumoured to run a powered up version of the EA888 engine used by the standard Golf R complete with a new cylinder head and induction system among other performance enhancing tweaks.

Engineering of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit has been overseen by Volkswagen’s head of engine development, Fritz Eichler – the man responsible for the development of Mercedes-Benz AMG division’s 355bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder used in the A45 AMG.

Details remain under wraps, but insiders say Eichler and his team have boosted reserves from 296bhp to somewhere in the region of 370bhp. Torque is also anticipated to rise from a standard 280lb ft to over 332lb ft.

As in the standard Golf R, the beefed-up reserves are expected to be channelled through a six-speed dual clutch gearbox and electro-mechanical Haldex multi-plate clutch four-wheel drive system.

Speaking at the recent Detroit motor show, Eichler told Autocar that advances in combustion technology had driven efficiency gains in modern day petrol engine development. When asked how much power he thought was possible from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, the laconic German who started his career at Porsche suggested 400bhp and up to 369lb ft was achievable.

Along with the bump in power, the Golf R Evo is likely to feature a stripped-out interior and selected carbonfibre body panels in a move Wolfsburg insiders say will see it hit the scales at below 1400kg.

That is pretty crazy if that is the correct weight. If true, that is going to be one heck of fun car to drive.

Well kudos to VW for cutting some weight, but keep in mind that car is the Euro spec. US versions will have to comply with our more stringent safery laws and will weigh more. And the DSG will add more weight too if you select that option.

I would still expect the US manual to come in right around 3200lbs which is not bad at all for an AWD vehicle with that much power and features.

Yet despite the increase in size, Volkswagen says the new three-door Golf R has shed 45kg, bringing its kerb weight down to 1476kg in manual guise.
This sounds more accurate:
http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/...t-drive-review

1476kg is 3254lbs, and it shed about 100lbs vs the previous version which is still great.

I have heard that, I am excited to get behind the wheel of an MKVII.

It really seems like VW listened to some of the criticisms of the MKVI R and made some nice changes. I wish the exterior was a little more aggressive, but you can't seem to have everything these days.

We talked about this on Vortex.....

Look at the flip side of it. It looks like a Golf (sleeper) so when it's parked it won't draw any attention out of the VW fans. Same thing on the road. I'd like it to look "rally" inspired with a wide body, extreme fenders, etc, but the sleeper-esque nature of it has more benefits. 31 MPG highway? Subaru are you listening?

How's the drivetrain in these? Looking up the power potential it seems very easy to add lots of torque/hp. Is it a rear bias or front bias system?

If there wasn't such a massive amount of douchebaggery driving v-dubs around in my neighborhood, I'd SERIOUSLY consider this as my next car. Great engine tech with superb fit and finish...might be time to swallow my pride.

I did some searching and it is front for economy, but is supposedly able to lock 50/50 at least. Interesting take on how to lock a center diff overall and it does have some controller mods you can do to make it more fun. Not sure I'd consider one of these over a 2015 Mustang, but we'll see.
